The life journey of Carmen, a fictional Spanish gypsy, a woman of destiny who lives her life "here and now", driven only by personal feelings, desires and the desire for freedom, is bounded by two key dates: 1845 and 1875. The year 1845 is the year of birth of the literary character Carmen in the novella of the same name by the French novelist Prosper Mérimé; thirty years later, the story of this modern-day femme fatale became the template for the libretto of Georges Bizet's new opera. The opera Carmen was not easy to create and even before the premiere it was accompanied by scandals criticizing the "immorality" of the main character and the entire opera. The response to the premiere was rather cold, and critics attacked not only the story, but also Bizet's music - among other things, it was said to be "not very melodically rich" and "Wagnerian". However, Carmen soon became one of the most popular and performed titles in the world opera repertoire.

Životní pouť Carmen, fiktivní španělské cikánky, osudové ženy, která žije svůj život „tady a teď“, hnána pouze osobními pocity, tužbami a touhou po svobodě, ohraničují dvě klíčová data: 1845 a 1875. Rok 1845 je rokem narození literární postavy Carmen ve stejnojmenné novele francouzského prozaika Prospera Mériméa; o třicet let později se příběh této novodobé femme fatale stal předlohou k libretu nové opery Georgese Bizeta. Operní Carmen nevznikala snadno a ještě před premiérou ji provázely skandály kritizující „nemorálnost“ hlavní hrdinky i celé opery. Ohlas na premiéru byl spíše chladný a kritika napadala nejen příběh, ale také Bizetovu hudbu – mimo jiné prý „málo melodicky bohatou“ a „wagneriánskou“. Avšak záhy se Carmen stala jedním z nejpopulárnějších a nejhranějších titulů světového operního repertoáru. S velkým úspěchem se tato opera vrátila koncem února 2010 na jeviště Národního divadla moravskoslezského již ve své desáté, pozoruhodné a strhující dynamické inscenaci.
