Carmen lives and loves in freedom away from all social conventions. When she is arrested because of an escalating argument with a colleague, she finds an unexpected admirer in the soldier Don José. This helps her to escape and - driven by love - gets into a spiral of crime. But when Carmen loses her interest in Don José and the rival Escamillo appears, fate takes a fateful turn.

Georges Bizet set himself the goal of revolutionizing the genre of the Opéra-Comique with his "Carmen" - and he succeeded. The premiere almost turned into a scandal, the uncompromising realism and the choice of social outsiders * as main characters surprised the audience and angered the critics: "A highly immoral work," wrote the newspapers. “Carmen” is both a milieu study and a psychogram at the same time. Hardly any opera mixes the themes of love, passion, freedom and death in such a consistent way, and the famous melodies such as “Habanera” and the couplet of the torero make “Carmen” one of the greatest world successes in opera history.

Jacopo Spirei stages the opera in a circus tent to match the unusual locations and characters from "Carmen".

 

“Carmen” was premiered in a version with spoken dialogues in 1875, but it was not until a series of performances in Vienna a few months later that the opera was able to achieve its continued success to this day. Georges Bizet (1838–1875) could no longer witness this triumphant advance of his most important composition; he died at the age of 36 just three months after its premiere.

Director Jacopo Spirei has staged at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Danish Royal Opera and the San Francisco Opera, among others. At the Salzburg State Theater he impressed with the productions "Brokeback Mountain" and "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny". In 2019, the entire Mozart-Da Ponte cycle could be shown in its production. Gabriel Venzago, First Kapellmeister of the Salzburg State Theater stands at the podium of the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra.
