Eröffnet wird der Abend mit Heinrich Schütz’ »Selig sind die Toten«, das Brahms einerseits zur Vorlage für seine eigene Komposition diente und andererseits zum großen Bogen des Konzerts wird. Schütz Motette und Brahms letzter Satz legen denselben Text aus den Seligpreisungen zu Grunde.

Dass Johannes Brahms sein Requiem für die Hinterbliebenen geschrieben hat und nicht für die Toten, ist in der Forschung häufig bemerkt worden. In Verbindung mit Mieczysław Weinbergs Klavierquintett rückt dieser Trost für die Trauernden in besonderer Weise ins Zentrum des Konzerts.

Weinberg, Kind jüdischer Eltern, war Zeit seines Lebens Verfolgungen, antisemitischer Hetze und Verhaftungen ausgesetzt. »Viele meiner Werke befassen sich mit dem Thema des Krieges«, schreibt er. »Ich sehe es als meine moralische Pflicht, vom Krieg zu schreiben, von den Gräueln, die der Menschheit in unserem Jahrhundert widerfuhren.«

Der Trost des Deutschen Requiems von Brahms bekommt in dieser Verbindung einen direkten Bezug. Die Erlösung vom Leiden und die Geborgenheit der Seelen bei Gott steht dem menschgemachten Leid gegenüber. Mit Brahms tranceartigem, elegischem Schlusssatz wird den Lebendigen und den Toten ein Stück Ruhe zurückgegeben.

The evening will open with Heinrich Schütz's »Blessed are the Dead« which Brahms used as a model for his own composition and on the other hand forms the broad spectrum of the concert. The Schütz motet and Brahms' last movement are based on the same text from the Beatitudes.

Researchers have often noticed that Johannes Brahms wrote his Requiem for the bereaved and not for the dead. In connection with Mieczysław Weinberg's piano quintet, this consolation for the mourners becomes the focus of the concert in a special way.

Weinberg, a child of Jewish parents, was subjected to persecution, anti-Semitic hate speech and arrests throughout his life. "Many of my works deal with the theme of war," he writes. "I see it as my moral duty to write about war, about the atrocities that befell humanity in our century."

The consolation of Brahms' German Requiem receives a direct reference in this connection. The salvation from suffering and the security of the souls with God contrasts with the man-made suffering. With Brahms' trance-like, elegiac final movement, the living and the dead are restored to a piece of calm.
