Andrea Chénier , premiered at the Milan Scala on March 28, 1896 with great success, remains the best known and most represented opera by the Italian verista composer Umberto Giordano.

The libretto An drea Chénier is loosely based on the life of French poet André Chénier, who was executed during the French Revolution on July 25, 1794, in the Terror . Saint Charles had been inaugurated about a year earlier—on the eve of the poet's execution in Paris , Giuseppe Sarti's opera Le gelosie villane was sung here .

The main reason for Andrea Chénier 's huge success is due to the passionate and vehement music offered to the title role and great tenors shone with it in our theater. Giuseppe Borgatti, the creator, who gained immediate fame after the debut, sang it in January 1902 and Franco Corelli, who was also one of the most famous performers of the role in the second half of the 20th century, sang it in 1957 and 1967 .

In this co-production by Trieste and Maribor, the title role is given to Marco Berti, who re-edits with Elisabete Matos the duo of Il tabarro recently performed in our theater. Baritone Claudio Sgura completes the love triangle.
