Concert performance in English and Italian The love story between the sea nymph Galateia and the shepherd Akis comes from Greek mythology and is already the subject of Ovid's Metamophoses. The plot is simple: Acis and Galatea love each other. However, Polifemo, a one-eyed cyclops, is also in love with Galatea and desires her. Out of resentment, he breaks off a mountain peak and kills Acis with it. With divine help, Galatea transforms her Acis into a river, which from now on delights all other shepherds with babbling.
Handel's Acis fabric is also based on this ancient story. The economically thinking composer edited
his two existing Acis settings and even combines English and Italian here. This creates a pasticcio-like mixed form in this work, which is rarely performed today, which is neither an opera nor an oratorio. Handel himself decidedly calls this version Serenata.
