Having attracted sold-out theatres in Naples, Berlin and Paris, this opera project The 7 Deaths of Maria Callas will enjoy its Dutch premiere exclusively in Carré Amsterdam on four nights. This opera is a performance with live music by internationally renowned sopranos. The orchestra's conductor is Yoel Gamzou. Abramovic herself will both be present live and also together with actor Willem Dafoe on-screen.

At the intersection of opera, performance and video art, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas pays tribute to the legacy of Greek-American soprano Maria Callas. Seven of her death scenes from her most iconic roles are reinterpreted by Abramović. This opera experience combines famous arias from La Traviata, Tosca, Otello, Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor and Norma with new music by Marko Nikodijević, sung by sopranos Nina Bernsteiner, Nadezhda Karyazina, Olga Kulchynska, Nina Minasyan, Emily Pogorelc, Marie Smolka and Eliza Boom. The "final" death is by Callas herself.

Marina Abramovic is widely known for her confrontational performance artwork in which human endurance is key. Her most famous work is no doubt The artist is present (2010) at the MOMA in New York where she sat on a chair for about 850 hours and looked people into their eyes. Her other work often has confrontational characteristics too, and the members of the audience also play a role in it. Before she moved to New York in 1991, she lived in Amsterdam for 25 years.
