6The Düsseldorf Opera was almost sold out. Under the musical direction of Péter Halász in the production by Elisabeth Stöppler, a war panorama unfolded that one could also imagine in the Ukraine, because Su Siegmund's costumes were timeless. Everything took place in a church room (stage design: Annika Haller). Splendid Nora Sourouzian as Eboli, who sings with emphasis and force, but who also has flattering soft tones.
Nora Sourouzian is a revelation. Her mezzo is of brilliant timbre, her vocal line magisterial. She portrays an ardent and passionate princess Eboli maintaining a rare vocal homogeneity throughout her range. She is completely at ease both in the canzone del velo, whose trills she varies with singular delicacy, as well as in her final aria O don fatale to whose superhuman challenges she fully rises.
Hilsdorf sharpens the victim's perspective. He tells the gloomy ballad of the curse, which is called family, with well-known constants of his work: Of course, table and bed are once again the pillars of the rise and fall of the characters. There is also carousing here: A nasty company, in which there is no room for being different, celebrates the festivals as the heroes fall right next to them.[...] The 'Lucia di Lammermoor' is one of the great successes of bel canto.And luck in itself is the excellent form of the food Philharmoniker act as advocates of the sometimes underestimated epoch. 'La Bohème' also plays at Christmas time. Johannes Leiacker's blue-framed stage design is wintry. It's snowing and snowing. The freezing artists live on a cinemascope-sized pedestal close to heaven.
