"Onegin" by Tchaikovsky was considered a desecration of Pushkin. The composer dared to give voice to the heroes of the novel in verse, dear to the Russian reader, and turned Pushkin's ironic passages into direct speech. Contrary to opera canons, Tchaikovsky abandoned large-scale sound, historical background and theatrical effects. For the first time, the plot of the opera was the private experiences of private individuals. At the premiere in 1879, only fifty years of history separated the heroes and the audience.

Director Dmitry Volkostrelov follows the composer's remarks. However, in the performance of the Ural Opera, time unfolds not linearly, but in a spiral. “Modernity cannot be ruled out in the theater, but one can imagine that times that are long gone continue to be with us. You can enter into a dialogue with the past.” This is how the heroes of the Pushkin era and our contemporaries meet on the stage, and dramatic actors participate on a par with opera soloists.

This meeting takes place in a birch grove. The artist Ksenia Peretrukhina installed fifty-seven real birch trees and also used antique furniture. “The touch of a performer on a real object on stage is perceived as our own. This does not happen in the case of props. The real thing lives life - it has scratches and scars, it is full of secrets. Objects on the stage line up in a real timeline - from the bed of the end of the 18th century to the Viennese chairs that stood in the boxes of the Yekaterinburg theater, and now they have become the heroes of the performance.

«Онегина» Чайковского считали надругательством над Пушкиным. Героям романа в стихах, дорогим для русского читателя, композитор осмелился дать голоса и превратил в прямую речь иронические пушкинские пассажи. Вопреки оперным канонам, Чайковский отказался от масштабного звучания, исторического фона и театральных эффектов. Сюжетом оперы впервые стали частные переживания частных лиц. На премьере в 1879 году героев и зрителей разделяло всего пятьдесят лет истории.

Режиссер Дмитрий Волкострелов следует ремаркам композитора. Однако в спектакле Урал Оперы время разворачивается не линейно, а по спирали. «В театре нельзя исключить современность, но можно представить, что времена, которые давно ушли, продолжают быть рядом с нами. Можно вступить с прошлым в диалог». Так на сцене встречаются герои пушкинской эпохи и наши современники, а драматические актеры участвуют наравне с оперными солистами.

Эта встреча происходит в березовой роще. Художница Ксения Перетрухина установила пятьдесят семь настоящих берез, а также использовала старинную мебель. «Прикосновение исполнителя к реальному предмету на сцене воспринимается как наше собственное. Этого не происходит в случае с бутафорией. Реальная вещь проживает жизнь — на ней царапины и шрамы, она полна тайн. Предметы на сцене выстраиваются в вещный таймлайн — от кровати конца XVIII века до венских стульев, которые стояли в ложах екатеринбургского театра, а теперь стали героями спектакля».
