French repertoire holds a special place in the heart of Benjamin Bernheim, one of the leading tenors of the new generation of singers. Bernheim’s list of recent performances, including the Opéra National de Bordeaux, underline his status as the opera world’s brightest rising star. His Deutsche Grammophon debut album, in which he is accompanied by the Prague Philharmonia under the baton of Emmanuel Villaume, captures the central roles in his current Romantic repertoire, including Massenet’s aria from “Werther“.
 
Recorded live in November of 2019 at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, “Pourquoi me réveiller, ô souffle du printemps?“ from Act III of Jules Massenet’s “Werther“ features the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine under the baton of Oleksandr Yankevych.

An absolute masterpiece of the French lyric repertoire, Massenet's flagship work and the last flame of musical romanticism in its twilight, Werther has never ceased to fascinate since its creation in Vienna in 1892, the composer having learned how to draw from Goethe's dramatic monument a heartbreaking opera. Event of this new production directed by Romain Gilbert: the taking of the role of Benjamin Bernheim (extraordinary Des Grieux in Manon in April 2019) who will play the eponymous hero for the first time on stage. It is Michèle Losier who, in the guise of Charlotte, will give him the reply with her bewitching timbre. All under the passionate baton of Pierre Dumoussaud, familiar with ONBA
