Pour des raisons personnelles, la mezzo-soprano Hermine May a été contrainte d’annuler sa participation à ce concert. Varduhi Abrahamyan a bien voulu accepter de la remplacer.

À l’origine ébauchée pour rendre hommage à Rossini, la Messe de Requiem de Verdi a finalement été complétée en l’honneur du poète italien Alessandro Manzoni. Le chef grec Teodor Currentzis donne une lecture très personnelle de ce chef-d’œuvre du répertoire sacré.

Lorsque Gioachino Rossini décède à Passy, le 13 novembre 1868, Verdi lance un grand projet faisant appel à douze compositeurs italiens, afin de composer un grand requiem lui rendant hommage. Le projet échoue pour des raisons essentiellement matérielles. Verdi en conserve cependant le Libera Me, et à la mort d’Alessandro Manzoni, il utilise le matériau pour en façonner une grandiose Messa da requiem, cette fois-ci seul. La création a lieu le 22 mai 1874, dans l’église médiévale de San Marco, à quelques centaines de mètres de la Scala. La partition contient des passages d’une force prodigieuse et d’une grande originalité, comme les célèbres coups de timbale à contretemps dans le Dies Irae. Teodor Currentzis, qui a fondé l’ensemble musicAeterna en 2004, propose une version à son image : à la fois rigoureuse et audacieuse.

Originally sketched as a tribute to Rossini, Verdi's Requiem Mass was ultimately completed in honor of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni. Greek conductor Teodor Currentzis gives a very personal reading of this masterpiece of the sacred repertoire.

When Gioachino Rossini died in Passy on November 13, 1868, Verdi launched a major project calling on twelve Italian composers to compose a grand requiem paying tribute to him. The project failed for essentially material reasons. Verdi, however, retained the Libera Me , and on the death of Alessandro Manzoni, he used the material to fashion a grandiose Messa da requiem , this time alone. The premiere took place on May 22, 1874, in the medieval church of San Marco, a few hundred meters from La Scala. The score contains passages of prodigious force and great originality, such as the famous off-beat timpani strokes in the Dies Irae . Teodor Currentzis, who founded the musicAeterna ensemble in 2004, offers a version in his image: both rigorous and daring.
