Un ballo in maschera is Verdi's first mature work and one of the composer's important works inspired by a real event, the assassination of the Swedish king Gustav III during a masked ball at the Stockholm Opera in 1792. The theatrical and spectacular staging by Waut Koeken for the Lorraine Opera uses the original libretto that sets the plot in Sweden, and not the censored version that forced Verdi to place it in Boston. Un ballo in maschera is a choral opera, very demanding for the three main characters, which for this season's performances will have a luxury cast.

Un ballo in maschera es el primer trabajo de madurez de Verdi y una de las obras importantes del compositor inspirada en un hecho real, el asesinato del rey sueco Gustavo III durante un baile de máscaras en la Ópera de Estocolmo en 1792. La teatral y espectacular puesta en escena realizada por Waut Koeken para la Ópera de Lorraine utiliza el libreto original que ambienta la trama en Suecia, y no la versión censurada que obligó a Verdi a ubicarlo en Boston. Un ballo in maschera es una ópera coral, muy exigente para los tres personajes principales, que para las funciones de esta temporada contará con un reparto de lujo.
