Introduction to »Ulisse« by Luigi Dallapiccola

The myth of Odysseus fascinated Luigi Dallapiccola for a lifetime. Based on countless arrangements of the material, the Italian composer developed his own reading, largely inspired by Dante, in his last opera Ulisse : Odysseus appears as a torn individual on the restless search for (self) knowledge.

Stranded in the realm of the Phaeacians, he remembers various stages of his wandering: the seductive, self-forgotten world of the lotophages, the intellectually formative liaison with the sorceress Kirke and the walk to Hades, where he meets his deceased mother. Back in his home town of Ithaca, Odysseus is initially unrecognized and mocked as "nobody". The pain of losing his identity drives him to revenge: He kills the suitors who are courting his wife Penelope before he sets off on his last expedition. In the long run alone, he believes that he can recognize the existence of a higher order in which his inner ambivalences are removed.   

A network of twelve-tone rows runs through Dallapiccola's score. All of these emerge from an original series which the composer calls "Mare I". The sea becomes the musical protagonist of the opera. The 13 episodes of the plot are each characterized by their own timbre: In the center of the symmetrically arranged sequence of images is the darkly orchestrated Hades scene, which Dallapiccola conceives in the form of a Bach mirror canon.

Director Tatjana Gürbaca has already dealt successfully with Dallapiccola's Il prigioniero . She makes her debut at the Frankfurt Opera with the production of Ulisse .
