Vánoce v divadle, to jsou Hry o Marii Bohuslava Martinů. Okouzlující, výpravná inscenace Martinů vánočního mystéria inspirovaná středověkým divadlem. Strhující sborové scény v podání tří brněnských sborů.  

Archanděl Gabriel ohlašuje příchod Krista. Moudré panny jsou připraveny, dychtivé a nepochybující. Lampy Panen pošetilých, vlažných ve víře, však zhasnou a ony přicházejí k prodavačům koupit olej právě ve chvíli, kdy přichází Kristus… Mariken – vesnická dívka, která se zdržela ve městě unesena pohledem na krámy a výklady. Teď bloudí sama v temném lese. Přichází Ďábel, slibuje ji vyvést z temnot a nabízí jí všechno bohatství světa. A Mariken podléhá… Panna Maria hledá místo, kde by porodila. V hospodě ani v kovárně pro ni není místo, proto uléhá do chléva za kovárnou… Jeptiška Paskalina, která sní o světské lásce, opustí klášter a jde za svým milencem. Po mnohých utrpeních se vrací do kláštera, kde její místo na celý ten čas převzala Matka boží. Ponořte se s námi do příběhů o pokušení, hříchu, pokání, odpuštění a vykoupení.

Vier Bilder, vier Parabeln über Sünde und Vergebung.

Der Erzengel Gabriel kündigt die Ankunft Christi an. Die klugen Jungfrauen sind bereit, begierig und ohne Zweifel. Die törichten Jungfrauen sind ungefestigt in ihrem Glauben. Ihre Lampen erlöschen, weshalb sie zum Händler müssen, um Öl zu kaufen, gerade wenn Christus kommt… Mariken: Ein Dorfmädchen verweilt in der Stadt, verzaubert von den Geschäften und Schaufenstern. Dann verirrt sie sich in dem dunklen Wald. Der Teufel kommt und verspricht, sie aus der Dunkelheit zu führen, und dazu alle Reichtümer der Welt. Mariken erliegt der Versuchung… Jungfrau Maria sucht einen Ort, wo sie herabkommen kann. Weder im Wirtshaus noch in der Schmiede gibt es einen Platz für sie, daher legt sie sich in die Scheune hinter der Schmiede… Die Nonne Pascalina, die von der weltlichen Liebe träumt, verlässt das Kloster und geht zu ihrem Geliebten. Nach vielen Leiden kehrt sie in das Kloster zurück, wo die Mutter Gottes in dieser Zeit ihren Platz eingenommen hat…

Es gibt Komponisten, deren Werke in keine fertigen Schubläden passen. Zu solchen gehört sicherlich auch der in Polička geborene Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959). Jede seiner Opern erforscht neue Möglichkeiten und baut originelle Brücken zwischen unterschiedlichen Kunstgattungen. So sind auch die Marienspiele, vier voneinander unabhängige Geschichten, von der christlichen Idee der Erlösung und Vergebung der Sünden beseelt. Die Geschichten – obwohl sie zueinander im Kontrast stehen – passen zueinander wie ein meisterhaft zusammengesetztes Mosaik: Die klugen und die törichten Jungfrauen (Prolog, Drama), Mariken von Nimwegen (Mirakel), Die Geburt des Herrn (Pastorale) und Schwester Pascalina (Legende). Trotz der vielfältigen Herkunft und Stilisierung sind sie mit Martinůs beeindruckender Musik verbunden, sodass aus einem großen Mysterium und einer kraftvollen spirituellen Aussage ein Ganzes entsteht. Die Uraufführung der Marienspiele fand am 23. Februar 1935 in dem heutigen Mahen-Theater unter dem Taktstock von Antonín Balatka und in der Regie von Rudolf Walter statt. Heute kehrt dieses einzigartige Stück von Bohuslav Martinů nach 80 Jahren an den Ort seiner ersten Einstudierung zurück, und zwar in Regie des künstlerischen Leiters der Oper, Jiří Heřman. Seine Inszenierung entstand ursprünglich 2009 als Koproduktionsprojekt des Prager Nationaltheaters mit der Opera Wrocławska und feierte auf beiden Bühnen große Erfolge.

Four paintings, four parables about sin and forgiveness.

The archangel Gabriel announces the coming of Christ. The wise virgins are eagerly prepared and unquestioning. The foolish virgins are lukewarm in their faith, allowing their lamps to go out and so have to go to buy oil at the very moment Christ arrives… Mariken – a village girl who stays too late in the town, transported by the vision of the shops and their displays. She then gets lost in the dark woods. The devil appears, promising to get her out of the darkness, and offers her all the riches of the world. Mariken succumbs… The Virgin Mary is looking for a place to give birth. Neither inns nor smithies have room for her, and so she ends up in a stable behind the smithy… The nun Paskalina, who dreams of worldly love, leaves her convent and goes to her lover. After much suffering she returns to the cloister, where her place was taken by the Mother of God in her absence.

There are composers whose works are not easily pigeonholed. One of them is clearly the native of Polička, Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959). Each of his operatic works explores new possibilities and in an original and exceptional manner creates bridges between various artistic genres. This is also the case with The Plays of Mary, made up of separate stories involving the Christian concepts of forgiveness of sin and redemption. It is made up of four independent tales, which however – despite the contrasts between them – are linked like the pieces of a masterfully constructed mosaic: “The Wise and Foolish Virgins” (prologue, drama), “Mariken of Nimègue“ (miracle), “The Nativity” (pastoral), “Sister Paskalina” (legend). Despite their diversity in style and origins when linked with Martinů’s compelling forceful music a whole is produced of the great mysteries and strong spiritual witness. The world premiere of The Plays of Mary took place on February 23, 1935, in what is now the Mahen Theatre under the baton of Antonín Balatka and directed by Rudolf Walter. Today this unique work of Bohuslav Martinů is returning after eighty years to the site of its first performance on the theatre stage under the direction of the artistic head of the opera Jiří Heřman. His production was originally created in 2009 as a coproduction project of the National Theatre in Prague and the Opera Wroclawska, and it was received to great acclaim in both theatres.
