Beloved countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo joins The Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble in Carnegie Hall’s most intimate performance space. They begin the program with selected arias by Handel—a definitive composer for Costanzo. “Handel is my bread and butter,” he recently told the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. “There’s a kind of freedom inherent in his music … for the singer to imagine the psychological journey and then to make that palpable.” Works by Osvaldo Golijov follow, including The Fire Outlives the Spark, a tribute to late violinist Geoff Nuttall with text from Shelley’s Adonais; and the world premiere of a companion piece commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera. In the second half of the concert, Yannick Nézet-Séguin joins the ensemble as pianist in Elgar’s Piano Quintet.
