Musical allusions and quotations abound in Shakespeare's works; however, they only work if the audience knows the corresponding template well. Conversely, Shakespeare's plays can be used to create a list of the popular songs of his day, a task that musicologist Ross W. Duffin undertook. The Playfords used his Shakespeare's Songbook as a real book, improvising to their liking, and just as all walks of life met at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, there is something for everyone - a musical panorama of English society during the late Renaissance .
