Sublime closing in the company of the prestigious phalanx of the Maison de la Radio invited for the first time to the Berlioz Festival and conducted by Maestro Thomas Hengelbrock, as well as the pianist Philippe Cassard.

“ Berlioz is a real caricature, without a shadow of talent, groping in the dark and believing himself the creator of a new world; with that he writes the most detestable things, and speaks, dreams only of Beethoven, Schiller and Goethe ” wrote Mendelssohn bluntly of Berlioz in 1831, when the two young men in their twenties were staying in Rome. This youthful annoyance did not prevent him from welcoming Berlioz with open arms years later to Leipzig, keeping in mind their Roman friendship.
Berlioz's judgment of Mendelssohn is quite different – ​​" he is an admirable boy, his talent for execution is as great as his musical genius– and he frequently conducts his works thereafter, such as his brilliant and virtuoso first piano concerto, begun in Rome.

Mendelssohn's pen is decidedly very sharp; According to him , Victor Hugo Ruy Blas ' play is quite simply " detestable and without any dignity ". He initially refuses to compose the opening that is asked of him before finally writing it in just three days.

With his Fantastic Symphony , Berlioz the " creator of a new world " revolutionized the framework of the symphony, innovated in its orchestration, managed to capture the very essence of his obsessive passion for the actress Harriet Smithson by embodying it in a melody recurring (the fixed idea), and composes one of the masterpieces of romantic symphonic music. A score that also includes thousands of sublimities.

« Berlioz est une vraie caricature, sans l’ombre de talent, cherchant à tâtons dans les ténèbres et se croyant le créateur d’un monde nouveau ; avec cela il écrit les choses les plus détestables, et ne parle, ne rêve que de Beethoven, Schiller et Goethe » écrit Mendelssohn sans ménagement à propos de Berlioz en 1831, alors que les deux jeunes hommes âgés d’une vingtaine d’années séjournent à Rome. Cet agacement juvénile ne l’empêchera pas d’accueillir Berlioz à bras ouverts des années plus tard à  Leipzig, gardant en mémoire leur amitié romaine.
Le jugement de Berlioz sur Mendelssohn est bien différent – « c’est un garçon admirable, son talent d’exécution est aussi grand que son génie musical » – et il dirige par la suite fréquemment ses œuvres, comme son premier concerto pour piano, brillant et virtuose, commencé à Rome.

La plume de Mendelssohn est décidément bien acérée ; la pièce de Victor Hugo Ruy Blas est selon lui tout simplement « détestable et sans aucune dignité ». Il refuse dans un premier temps de composer l’ouverture qu’on lui demande avant de finalement l’écrire en trois jours seulement.

Avec sa Symphonie fantastique, Berlioz le « créateur d’un monde nouveau » révolutionne le cadre de la symphonie, innove dans son orchestration, parvient à capter l’essence même de sa passion obsessionnelle pour la comédienne Harriet Smithson en l’incarnant en une mélodie récurrente (l’idée fixe), et compose l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de la musique symphonique romantique. Une partition qui elle aussi comporte des milliers de sublimités.
