‘Music from heaven’ is how Antonín Dvořák described Pohádka (Fairy Tale) by his son-in-law Josef Suk. The composer wrote the music for the play Radúz and Mahulena by Julius Zeyer and caused a furore especially in his own country with the fabulous suite. The fairy tale is the common thread running through this programme from the Flanders Symphony Orchestra. From The Unanswered Question, that masterful musical question about the meaning of existence posed by Charles Ives, to Humperdinck’s prelude from the opera Hansel and Gretel to Ravel’s bewitching Ma Mère l’oye. Until you come to the music of Suk, which is virtually unknown in Belgium, but is a favourite of conductor Martijn Dendievel. In the meantime, actress Maaike Cafmeyer transforms everyday reality into a fairy-tale dream world.

‘Muziek uit de hemel', zo noemde Antonín Dvořák Pohádka (Sprookje) van zijn schoonzoon Josef Suk. De componist schreef de muziek bij het theaterstuk Radúz en Mahulena van Julius Zeyer en maakte vooral in eigen land furore met de fabelachtige suite. Het sprookje is de rode draad in dit programma van Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen. Van The Unanswered Question, die meesterlijke muzikale vraag naar de zin van het bestaan van Charles Ives, over Humperdincks prelude uit de opera Hans en Grietje tot Ravels betoverende Ma Mère l’oye. Tot je uitkomt bij de bij ons vrijwel onbekende muziek van Suk, één van de favorieten van dirigent Martijn Dendievel. Ondertussen tovert actrice Maaike Cafmeyer de alledaagse werkelijkheid om tot een sprookjesachtige droomwereld.

« Une musique venue du ciel », voilà comment Antonín Dvořák décrivit Pohádka (Conte de fées) de son beau-fils Josef Suk. Le compositeur avait écrit l'œuvre pour la pièce de théâtre Radúz et Mahulena de Julius Zeyer. La suite fabuleuse connut surtout un grand succès dans son propre pays. Le Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen adopte pour ce programme de concert le conte de fées comme fil conducteur. De The Unanswered Question de Charles Ives, une interrogation magistrale sur le sens de la vie, l'orchestre passe au prélude de Hänsel und Gretel de Humperdinck, puis à l'enchanteur Ma Mère l’oye de Ravel, avant d'aboutir à la pièce de Suk, quasiment inconnue chez nous, mais l'une des œuvres préférées du chef d'orchestre Martijn Dendievel. Entretemps l'actrice Maaike Cafmeyer transmute la réalité quotidienne en univers de rêve féerique.
