When Kristiina Poska started in 2019 as chief conductor of the Flanders Symphony Orchestra, she promised to record all of Beethoven's symphonies. His First and Seventh symphonies are already in the can. Now, with spring in the air, it is time for the Sixth, also known as the Pastorale. Despite his increasing deafness, Beethoven managed to capture the joy of rural life in music in this piece. You can hear dancing farmers, a singing nightingale, a rippling stream and a soft shepherd’s song. Gustav Mahler was also inspired by spring in the second part of his Symphony No. 3, in which nature comes to life. In 1941, Benjamin Britten wrote a special adaptation of this part for a smaller orchestra, entitled What the Wild Flowers tell me. With his Illuminatio for viola and orchestra, the Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür transports us on a profound journey from darkness to light. Violist Nils Mönkemeyer is our guide on this mysterious tour. Prepare for a concert that will get you into the spring mood.

Toen Kristiina Poska in 2019 begon als chef-dirigent bij het Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen beloofde ze alle symfonieën van Beethoven op te nemen. De Eerste en Zevende Symfonie zijn inmiddels ingeblikt. Nu, met de lente in de lucht, is het tijd voor de Zesde, ook wel de Pastorale genoemd. Ondanks zijn toenemende doofheid, wist Beethoven in dit stuk de vreugde van het plattelandsleven te vangen in muziek. Je hoort dansende boeren, een zingende nachtegaal, een kabbelend beekje en een zacht herderslied.

Gustav Mahler liet zich ook inspireren door de lente in het tweede deel van zijn Derde Symfonie, waarin de natuur tot leven komt. Benjamin Britten maakte in 1941 een speciale bewerking van dit deel voor een kleiner orkest, getiteld What the Wild Flowers tell me. De Estse componist Erkki-Sven Tüür neemt ons met zijn Illuminatio voor altviool en orkest mee op een diepzinnige reis van duisternis naar licht. Quand en 2019 Kristiina Poska a pris ses fonctions comme cheffe principale du Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, elle a promis d'enregistrer toutes les symphonies de Beethoven. C'est chose faite pour la Symphonie n° 1 et la Symphonie n° 7, et maintenant que le printemps s'annonce, le moment est venu d'enregistrer la Symphonie n° 6, également appelée la Pastorale. Malgré sa surdité croissante, Beethoven a su y exprimer en musique les joies de la vie rurale. Vous entendez des paysans qui dansent, le chant du rossignol, le murmure d'un ruisseau et une douce mélopée de berger.

Gustav Mahler s'est, lui aussi, inspiré du printemps pour le deuxième mouvement de sa Symphonie n° 3, dans lequel la nature s'anime. Benjamin Britten a réalisé en 1941 une transcription de ce mouvement pour effectif plus réduit, intitulé What the Wild Flowers tell me. Le compositeur estonien Erkki-Sven Tüür, dans son Illuminatio pour alto et orchestre, nous invite à l'accompagner dans un voyage recueilli de l'obscurité à la lumière.
