In 1981, a young French conductor was appointed as Music Director of La Monnaie. In the decade that followed, he became the face of a younger, more dynamic and more accomplished La Monnaie orchestra. Now, more than forty years later, Sylvain Cambreling is finally returning, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our Orchestra with a festive concert programme. We sat down with the maestro to look back on his tenure with some glorious archive footage.

Sylvain Cambreling | Looking back with a legendary La Monnaie Music Director (1981-1991)

One of the peaks in the history of La Monnaie was the creation of Emmanuel Chabrier's opera Gwendoline in 1886. Seventeen years later, Ernest Chausson in turn chose Brussels to reveal his opera Le Roi Arthus to the public. Barely a century after Gwendoline , Philippe Boesmans began the impressive series of operas he premiered at La Monnaie as composer in residence. These three key moments in the history of our house will be commemorated by as many works: by Chabrier, you will hear the overture of Gwendoline , Chausson, the rarely performed and yet so beautiful Symphony , and Boesmans, the magnificent cycle of Trakl-Lieder melodies. Sylvain Cambreling, who was the musical director of La Monnaie under Gerard Mortier and who created the Boesmans cycle in 1988 and 1990, returns, thirty years after this famous period, to lead our orchestra, as guest conductor for this anniversary concert.
