It is a miracle of Western music, a summit work and a resounding sacrament at the same time: the Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. When the composition was rediscovered by an astonished posterity in the early nineteenth century, it was considered by many to be the "greatest musical work of art of all time", written for the royal court in Dresden in order to obtain the prestigious title of Royal Saxon Court Kapellmeister and completed on his deathbed to a monumental Missa tota, a comprehensive setting of the Mass. With the work, Bach, the Protestant church musician, presented a large Catholic mass and thus no less representatively charged princely festival music that is still able to fascinate Protestants and Catholics, agnostics and atheists alike. Moments of meditative immersion alternate with sections of expressive intensity. The bundling of Bach's compositional mastery becomes audible, in which artistic standards and contrapuntal complexity reach a qualitative height from which a moving view of the Thomaskantor's diverse musical landscape is offered.

Sie ist ein Wunder abendländischer Musik, Gipfelwerk und tönendes Sakrament zugleich: die h-Moll-Messe von Johann Sebastian Bach. Als die Komposition von einer staunenden Nachwelt im frühen neunzehnten Jahrhundert wiederentdeckt wurde, galt sie nicht wenigen als das »größte musikalische Kunstwerk aller Zeiten«, geschrieben für den königlichen Hof in Dresden zur Erlangung des prestigeträchtigen Titels eines königlich-sächsischen Hofkapellmeisters und vervollständigt auf dem Sterbebett zu einer monumentalen Missa tota, einer umfassenden Messvertonung. Mit dem Werk legte Bach, der protestantische Kirchenmusiker, eine große katholische Messe vor und damit eine nicht weniger repräsentativ aufgeladene fürstliche Festmusik, die noch heute Protestanten und Katholiken, Agnostiker und Atheisten gleichermaßen zu faszinieren vermag. Momente meditativer Versenkung wechseln sich ab mit Abschnitten expressiver Intensität. Hörbar wird die Bündelung der kompositorischen Meisterschaft Bachs, in der Kunstanspruch und kontrapunktische Komplexität eine qualitative Höhe erreichen, von der aus sich ein ergreifender Blick auf die vielgestaltige Musiklandschaft des Thomaskantors bietet.
