The cellist Mischa Maisky is one of the best-known representatives of his instrument worldwide. He is the only cellist to have studied with the great cello legends Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorski. Rostropovich praised him as "...one of the most extraordinary talents of the younger generation."
Born in Latvia and educated in Russia, Maisky was received enthusiastically in the world's great concert halls after his repatriation to Israel. He sees himself as a citizen of the world: "I play an Italian cello, with French and German bows and Austrian and German strings, my six children were born in four different countries [...], I feel at home wherever people play classical music enjoy and appreciate.” As an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Maisky has made more than 30 recordings over the past 25 years – with the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchester de Paris.

The exceptional cellist has a very special connection to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich. Alongside the Würzburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Mischa Maisky will perform Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 107, which Shostakovich dedicated to his good friend Rostropovich and which is undoubtedly one of Maisky's great showpieces.

Der Cellist Mischa Maisky ist weltweit einer der bekanntesten Vertreter seines Instruments. Als einziger Cellist hat er bei den großen Cello-Legenden Mstislaw Rostropowitsch und Gregor Piatigorski studiert. Rostropowitsch pries ihn als „ … eines der außergewöhnlichsten Talente der jüngeren Generation.“
In Lettland geboren und in Russland ausgebildet, wurde Maisky nach seiner Repatriierung in Israel mit Begeisterung in den großen Konzertsälen der Welt empfangen. Er selbst sieht sich als Weltbürger: „Ich spiele ein italienisches Cello, mit französischen und deutschen Bögen und österreichischen und deutschen Saiten, meine sechs Kinder wurden in vier verschiedenen Ländern geboren […], ich fühle mich überall dort wohl, wo die Leute klassische Musik genießen und schätzen.“ Als exklusiver Deutscher Grammophon Künstler hat Maisky in den letzten 25 Jahren über 30 Aufnahmen erarbeitet – mit den Wienern und Berliner Philharmonikern, dem London Symphony Orchester oder etwa dem Orchestre de Paris.

Eine ganz besondere Verbindung hegt der Ausnahmecellist zu der Musik Dmitri Schostakowitschs. An der Seite des Philharmonischen Orchesters Würzburgs bringt Mischa Maisky dessen 1. Cellokonzert op. 107 zu Gehör, das Schostakowitsch seinem guten Freund Rostropowitsch widmete, und das ohne Zweifel zu den großen Paradestücken Maiskys gehört.
