Sir John Eliot Gardiner is presenting a programme in the minor mode with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, juxtaposing tragic music by Haydn with melancholy strains from Schumann. Symphonies by Haydn and Schumann frame arias by the same two composers, seemingly tailor-made for the diamantine soprano of Anna Prohaska. The first half of the concert is devoted to two rare minore symphonies by Haydn: No. 52 in C minor and No. 44 in E minor. Both reflect the age of Sturm und Drang in their upsurges of passion. Haydn even chose the hovering, otherworldly slow movement from the E-minor work for his own funeral – hence its nickname, the “Mourning” Symphony. Between movements Anna Prohaska will sing Haydn’s solo cantata Berenice, che fai? It resembles a scene from a tragic opera: in an outpouring of despair the Egyptian queen Berenice fears that her lover has committed suicide.  In the second half of the concert Gardiner, a devout Schumannian, will conduct music by this melancholy romantic composer. First Prohaska will sing Gretchen’s dolorous guilt-ridden prayer from Schumann’s visionary Scenes from “Faust”. Then Sir John will release his audience into the May evening with a ray of hope, as Schumann’s D minor Fourth Symphony comes to an end in a jubilant D major.
