История оперы знает немало случаев, когда премьеры шедевров оборачивались провалом. К числу произведений с нелёгкой сценической судьбой, куда входят «Кармен» и «Травиата», принадлежит и «Симон Бокканегра», также не понятый с первого раза. Его появление на свет в венецианском театре Ла Фениче в 1857 году сопровождали неудача и упрёки в запутанности и мрачности сюжета. Верди признал критику справедливой, хотя и продолжал любить своё оперное детище как «горбатого сына». К счастью, «Симону» было суждено пережить обновление и второе рождение, когда Верди обрёл талантливого соратника в лице либреттиста и композитора Арриго Бойто. Он помог Верди доработать литературный текст оперы, прояснив сюжетные линии, сделав образы более крупными, а контрасты — яркими. Центром произведения стала знаменитая сцена в Зале Совета, вдохновившая великого композитора на создание лучших страниц его музыкального наследия. Премьера новой редакции «Симона» состоялась в Ла Скала в 1881 году, и с тех пор именно она украшает репертуар ведущих оперных театров мира. В российской театральной афише это название долгое время было раритетным, и появлением «своего» «Симона» отечественная музыкальная сцена обязана маэстро Гергиеву. В 2008 году опера дважды исполнялась в Концертном зале Мариинского театра с участием приглашённых звёзд — Томаса Хэмпсона и Ферруччо Фурланетто, а в 2016 году на новой сцене Мариинского театра прошла премьера полномасштабного спектакля в авторской копии совместной итальянской постановки (режиссёр и художник-постановщик — Андреа Де Роза), ставшая ярчайшим событием театрального сезона. Приход оперы о прославленном доже-корсаре в Петербург и Владивосток весьма закономерен и символичен, ибо это — одно из самых «морских» произведений в истории мировой музыки. Море — не просто красочный оркестровый фон, но главный персонаж и участник действия: его дыхание насквозь пронизывает партитуру Верди, к нему неизменно обращены мысли титульного героя. История Симона тоже погружена в водоворот любви и политики, где сливаются воедино борьба за власть и личная драма. Образ Бокканегры, в котором сочетаются государственный деятель и любящий родитель, справедливо сравнивают с Борисом Годуновым Мусоргского. Постановка, лаконичная и величественная одновременно, тонко следует колориту и атмосфере оперы. Декорации намечают историческую эпоху акцентами в виде фрагмента готического фасада или трона правителя. Основное внимание концентрируется на героях, облачённых в роскошные костюмы с преобладающими серебристо-голубыми и тёмно-синими (цвета моря), а также пурпурно-золотыми (цвета любви и власти) оттенками. И над всем царит водная стихия — вечная и изменчивая, она получает зримое воплощение через проекции на гигантскую циклораму.

The history of opera knows many cases when the premieres of masterpieces turned out to be a failure. Among the works with a difficult stage fate, which includes Carmen and La Traviata, is Simon Boccanegra, which was also not understood the first time. His birth at the Venetian theater La Fenice in 1857 was accompanied by failure and reproaches for the intricacies and gloominess of the plot. Verdi recognized the criticism as fair, although he continued to love his opera brainchild as a "humpbacked son." Fortunately, "Simon" was destined to survive the renewal and rebirth, when Verdi found a talented colleague in the person of the librettist and composer Arrigo Boito. He helped Verdi refine the literary text of the opera, clarifying the storylines, making the images larger and the contrasts brighter. The center of the work was the famous scene in the Council Hall, which inspired the great composer to create the best pages of his musical heritage. The premiere of the new edition of "Simon" took place at La Scala in 1881, and since then it has graced the repertoire of the world's leading opera houses. In the Russian theater playbill, this name was rare for a long time, and the appearance of "its own" "Simon" on the Russian musical scene is due to maestro Gergiev. In 2008, the opera was performed twice at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater with the participation of guest stars Thomas Hampson and Ferruccio Furlanetto, and in 2016 the premiere of a full-scale performance was held on the new stage of the Mariinsky Theater in the author's copy of the joint Italian production (director and production designer - Andrea De Rosa), which has become the brightest event of the theatrical season. The arrival of the opera about the famous Corsair Doge in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok is quite logical and symbolic, because it is one of the most "marine" works in the history of world music. The sea is not just a colorful orchestral background, but the main character and participant in the action: its breath permeates Verdi's score through and through, the thoughts of the titular hero are invariably turned to him. Simon's story is also immersed in a maelstrom of love and politics, where power struggles and personal drama merge. The image of Boccanegra, which combines a statesman and a loving parent, is rightly compared to Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. The production, laconic and majestic at the same time, subtly follows the color and atmosphere of the opera. The scenery outlines the historical era with accents in the form of a fragment of the Gothic facade or the throne of the ruler. The focus is on the characters dressed in luxurious costumes with predominant silver-blue and dark blue (the colors of the sea), as well as purple-gold (the colors of love and power) hues. And the water element reigns over everything - eternal and changeable, it receives a visible embodiment through projections onto a giant cyclorama.
