The score, in its current state, is unthinkable," said Verdi when re- performing Simon Boccanegra , an opera composed for Venice in 1857 and which has fallen into oblivion following its failure. It was the publisher Ricordi who encouraged the composer, in 1881, to revise the work by collaborating for the first time with Boito, the future librettist of Otello . Once reworked and amplified, the score will meet with success in Milan and will become the first major part of the master's late works.

Simon Boccanegra is undoubtedly the most endearing father and baritone of all of the Maestro's production. The relationship with her daughter is calm and affectionate. He tries to avoid all conflicts and a deadly war with Venice. Betrayed and poisoned, he remains dignified and takes on a great nobility of character. Verdi was attached to this singular character, a political vector in spite of himself, advocating the unity of Italy and deploying an extraordinary benevolent humanism. While Italy had been unified for twenty years and that the composer, retired for ten years, had become a real "national treasure", it was time, before thinking of finding Shakespeare and his Otello , to restore the coat of arms of an unloved work and make it a last symbol of the Risorgimentowhile amplifying the psychological and political stature of a great man.

« La partition, dans son état actuel, est impensable » disait Verdi au moment de reprendre Simon Boccanegra, un opéra composé pour Venise en 1857 et tombé dans l’oubli à la suite de son insuccès. C’est l’éditeur Ricordi qui incita le compositeur, en 1881, à réviser l’œuvre en collaborant pour la première fois avec Boito, le futur librettiste d’Otello. Une fois remaniée et amplifiée, la partition rencontrera le succès à Milan et deviendra le premier grand volet des œuvres tardives du maître.

Simon Boccanegra est assurément le père et le baryton le plus attachant de toute la production du Maestro. La relation avec sa fille est apaisée et affectueuse. Il tente d’éviter tous les conflits et une guerre meurtrière avec Venise. Trahi et empoisonné, il reste digne et revêt une grande noblesse de caractère. Verdi tenait à ce personnage singulier, vecteur politique malgré lui, prônant l’unité de l’Italie et déployant un humanisme bienveillant hors du commun. Alors que l’Italie était unifiée depuis une vingtaine d’années et que le compositeur, à la retraite depuis dix ans, était devenu un véritable « trésor national », il était temps, avant de songer à retrouver Shakespeare et son Otello, de redorer le blason d’une œuvre mal aimée et d’en faire un dernier symbole du Risorgimento tout en amplifiant la stature psychologique et politique d’un grand homme.
