He was crowned musical messiah by Robert Schumann at the age of only twenty, but Brahms himself preferred to reflect on the human in art. In 1868 he wrote his great "musical beatitude of the mourners". The religious freethinker composed the work during a phase of strong doubts about the church as an institution. The result is not funeral music, but a work to comfort the living, which raises the perennial question of the relationship between transience and eternity.

After performances in Geneva, Bergamo and Aix-en-Provence, the deeply moving work can now finally be heard at the Stadtcasino Basel with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Radio Choir and under the direction of Marek Janowski.

Von Robert Schumann wurde er mit nur zwanzig Jahren zum musikalischen Messias gekrönt, doch Brahms selbst bevorzugte die Besinnung auf das Menschliche in der Kunst. 1868 schrieb er seine grosse «musikalische Seligpreisung der Leidtragenden». Das Werk komponierte der religiöse Freigeist in einer Phase starker Zweifel an der Institution Kirche. Entstanden ist keine Begräbnismusik, sondern ein Werk zum Trost für die Lebenden, das die immerwährende Frage zum Verhältnis von Vergänglichkeit und Ewigkeit aufwirft.

Nach Aufführungen in Genf, Bergamo und Aix-en-Provence wird das tief berührende Werk mit dem Sinfonieorchester Basel, dem MDR-Rundfunkchor und unter der Leitung von Marek Janowski nun endlich auch im Stadtcasino Basel zu hören sein.
