‘I don’t like writing songs’, admitted Beethoven, who felt like a fish out of water when composing music for singing. And yet throughout his life he crafted songs which – as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau put it – ‘open the door of German song’. Despite their qualities, they remain little known, which is hardly surprising given the wealth of his achievements in instrumental music.

Beethoven challenged the format of the stanzaic song that dominated at the time and sometimes employed a through-composed form, in which the music follows the words. He occasionally set the same texts several times, in completely different ways, and was also known to return to them years later.

One example of this approach is ‘An die Hoffnung’ (‘To hope’), first set in 1805 as a stanzaic song, which he dedicated to his friend Josephine Deym, one of the candidates for the title of ‘immortal beloved’. Ten years later, he wrote new music to the same verse, emphasising the drama in the text. Crucial differences here are the addition of the first, key strophe of the poem and the repeat of the second strophe at the end as a suitable conclusion.

In the song ‘Resignation’, to a text by Haugwitz that speaks of coming to terms with a painful loss, the music follows the words quite faithfully. The composer instructed that it be performed ‘With feeling, yet resolutely, well accented, and sung as though spoken’.

Beethoven was an admirer of Goethe and composed as many as 11 songs to his words. He began work on the song ‘Neue Liebe, neues Leben’ (‘New love, new life’) in 1792, completed it in 1799 then revised it ten years later. Just how strenuously he sought the right shape for this work can be gauged from the seven sketched versions of the ending. A similarly joyous mood emanates from ‘Maigesang’ (‘May song’). In ‘Wonne der Wehmut’, Beethoven employs very limited means to obtain remarkably powerful expression, and he sustains the titular ‘delight in melancholy’ through sparingly meted out repeats of certain words and phrases.

No doubt we would not remember Christian Ludwig Reissig today if Beethoven had not so readily turned to his poetry. The eight settings of his verse include the charming ‘Lied aus der Ferne’ (‘Song from afar’), which in its definitive version possesses a remarkably elaborate piano part. Where the words speak of longing, there are ‘excursions’ into a minor key. In ‘Der Liebende’, the piano supports the excitable vocal part with lively figurations, suggestively illustrating the beloved’s state of mind.

The delightful ‘Adelaide’, to words by Matthisson, is perhaps Beethoven’s best loved song. The poet sees and hears his beloved’s name everywhere, and in the last stanza it even glows on the petals of the flower that grows on his grave. The composer elatedly repeats the closing passages of the text in a succession of different musical guises. In 1800 Beethoven sent this work to Matthisson, but he ‘replied’ in a peculiar way… 11 years later! In the preface to an edition of his poetry, he wrote: ‘Many composers breathed life into this short lyrical fantasy with their music, but I am deeply convinced that no one surpassed the text more than the brilliant Ludwig van Beethoven’. The composer himself must have been particularly pleased with this song, because he performed it in front of the crowned heads of Europe during the Congress of Vienna – his final appearance as a pianist.

A separate position is held by the Six Songs, Op. 48, written in 1803 to words by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert. His famous collection Geistliche Oden und Lieder (‘Spiritual odes and songs’, 1757), containing works for various occasions in Christian life, spawned a number of musical settings in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with the set by Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach particularly significant. Beethoven chose six pieces from Gellert’s collection, all of them quite short, with only the last song (‘Song of Atonement’) somewhat longer. The character of the music, in keeping with the subject matter – the love of one’s neighbour, death, the glory of God in the works of nature – is highly varied. The last work, although it speaks of atonement, ends with a cheerful section – an expression of hope for forgiveness. These songs were dedicated to Count Johann Georg von Browne, and the motivation for setting these particular texts was the death of his wife, in May 1803. Huge popularity across the world was gained by the song ‘Die Ehre Gottes aus der Natur’, which can often be heard in churches in choral arrangements. These songs were also popular in Poland, as evidenced by the fact that they were published with Polish and German words as Sześć śpiewów nabożnych (Kiev, 1858).

A special place in Beethoven’s song output is held by the cycle An die ferne Geliebte (‘To the distant beloved’), composed in 1816 to verse by Alois Jeitteles, a young medical student. This poetry, suffused with ardent feelings, not only resonated particularly strongly with Beethoven, but also moved him to create an innovative form – the song cycle (taken up several years later by Schubert). In his hands, the six short poems were transformed into a single, internally cohesive whole – the successive songs flow into one another without a break. That formal cohesion is further enhanced by the return of the first song’s music at the end – this is also an unprecedented procedure, linked to the content of the verse: the poet believes that his songs can conquer the distance that separates him from his beloved.

Until recently, it was assumed that this work expressed Beethoven’s own feelings, but the latest research has shed new light on this. The composition is dedicated to the composer’s protector, Prince Lobkowitz, who had recently lost his wife – no doubt the ‘distant beloved’. This is borne out by the title, which in the autograph manuscript reads slightly differently: An die entfernte Geliebte (‘To the removed beloved’).

The first sketches of ‘Das Liedchen von der Ruhe’, to words by Hermann Ueltzen, date from the Bonn years. This song ultimately formed part of the 8 Songs, Op. 52, published in 1805. Its reflective tone matches the serious content, contrary to the term ‘little song’, since the poet will find the titular ‘rest’ not in love, but in… death.

‘An die Geliebte’ (‘To the beloved’), to words by the Viennese journalist Johann Ludwig Stoll, is a charming trifle which Beethoven offered to one of his most faithful admirers, Antonia Brentano.

„Niechętnie piszę pieśni” – wyznał kiedyś Beethoven, który komponując muzykę do śpiewu, nie czuł się w swoim żywiole. Przez całe życie tworzył jednak z upodobaniem pieśni, które – jak to ujął Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau – „otwierają drzwi pieśni niemieckiej”. Mimo swych walorów pozostają one mało znane, co nie dziwi wobec ogromu dokonań mistrza z Bonn w dziedzinie muzyki instrumentalnej.

Beethoven próbował przełamać dominujący w jego czasach schemat pieśni zwrotkowej i stosował niekiedy tzw. formę przekomponowaną, w której muzyka podąża za słowem. Bywało, że niektóre teksty opracowywał kilkakrotnie, w zupełnie odmienny sposób, i powracał do nich nieraz po latach.

Przykładem takiego podejścia jest An die Hoffnung (Do nadziei), opracowana po raz pierwszy w 1805 r. jako pieśń zwrotkowa, którą ofiarował zaprzyjaźnionej Josephine Deym, jednej z pretendentek do miana „nieśmiertelnej ukochanej”. Po dziesięciu latach napisał do tego samego wiersza nową muzykę, z naciskiem na udramatyzowanie tekstu. Istotną różnicą jest dodanie pierwszej, kluczowej strofy wiersza, a także powtórzenie na końcu drugiej jako odpowiedniej konkluzji.

W Resignation (Rezygnacja) do wiersza Haugwitza, mówiącego o pogodzeniu się z bolesną stratą, muzyka podąża wiernie za tekstem. Kompozytor zalecił ją wykonywać „Z uczuciem, lecz zdecydowanie, dobrze akcentując i na wzór mowy”.

Beethoven był wielbicielem Goethego i skomponował aż 11 pieśni do jego słów. Wielokrotnie wracał do wiersza Neue Liebe, neues Leben (Nowa miłość, nowe życie): zaczął pracę nad muzyką w 1792 r., ukończył ją w 1799, a zrewidował dziesięć lat później. O tym, jak usilnie poszukiwał właściwego kształtu utworu, świadczy m.in. siedem (!) zapisanych w szkicowniku wersji zakończenia. Podobnie radosny nastrój emanuje też z Maigesang (Pieśni majowej). W Wonne der Wehmut (Rozkosz smutku) Beethoven stosuje bardzo ograniczone środki, by osiągnąć niezwykłą siłę ekspresji, a podtrzymuje tytułową „rozkosz smutku” oszczędnie dozowanymi powtórzeniami niektórych słów i fraz.

Nie pamiętalibyśmy dziś zapewne o Christianie Ludwigu Reissigu, gdyby Beethoven nie sięgał tak chętnie do jego poezji. Wśród ośmiu utworów do jego wierszy jest urocza Lied aus der Ferne (Pieśń z oddali), która w definitywnej wersji ma niezwykle rozbudowaną partię fortepianu. Tam, gdzie mowa o tęsknocie, następuje wycieczka do tonacji mollowej. W pieśni Der Liebende (Zakochany) fortepian ożywionymi figuracjami wspiera pełną ekscytacji partię wokalną, sugestywnie ilustrując stan ducha zakochanego.

Zachwycająca Adelaide do wiersza Friedricha Mathissona to chyba najbardziej lubiana pieśń Beethovena. Poeta wszędzie widzi i słyszy imię ukochanej, a w ostatniej zwrotce zalśni ono nawet na płatkach kwiatu, który wyrośnie na jego grobie. Kompozytor powtarza końcowe fragmenty tekstu w uniesieniu, w coraz to innym muzycznym kształcie. W 1800 r. Beethoven posłał utwór Mathissonowi – lecz ten odpowiedział na przesyłkę w szczególny sposób, i to dopiero po 11 latach! W przedmowie do wydania swych poezji napisał mianowicie: „Wielu kompozytorów tchnęło życie swą muzyką w tę małą fantazję liryczną, lecz w moim najgłębszym przekonaniu nikt nie przewyższył tekstu bardziej niż genialny Ludwig van Beethoven”. Sam kompozytor też musiał tę pieśń szczególnie cenić, bo wykonał ją wobec koronowanych głów podczas kongresu wiedeńskiego – miał to być jego ostatni występ w roli pianisty.

Odrębną pozycję zajmuje Sześć pieśni op. 48, napisanych w roku 1803 do słów Christiana Fürchtegotta Gellerta. Jego sławny zbiór Geistliche Oden und Lieder (Ody i pieśni duchowne, 1757), zawierający utwory na różne okazje życia chrześcijańskiego, zaowocował w XVIII i XIX w. licznymi opracowaniami muzycznymi, wśród których szczególne znaczenie mają te dokonane przez Carla Philippa Emmanuela Bacha. Beethoven wybrał ze zbioru Gellerta sześć fragmentów, wszystkie dość krótkie – tyko ostatni (Pieśń pokutna) – ma większe rozmiary. Charakter muzyki, zgodnie z tematyką – miłość bliźniego, śmierć, pochwała Boga przez dzieła natury – jest bardzo zróżnicowany. Ostatni utwór, choć mówi o pokucie, zamyka się fragmentem pogodnym – to wyraz nadziei na przebaczenie. Pieśni zostały dedykowane hrabiemu Johannowi Georgowi von Browne, a powodem ich skomponowania do tych szczególnych tekstów była śmierć jego żony w maju 1803 r.

Ogromną popularność na całym świecie zdobyła pieśń Die Ehre Gottes aus der Natur (Cześć Boga z dzieł natury), którą często można usłyszeć w kościołach w opracowaniach chóralnych. Pieśni te cieszyły się powodzeniem również w Polsce, o czym świadczy ich wydanie z tekstem polskim i niemieckim jako Sześć śpiewów nabożnych (Kijów 1858).

Szczególne miejsce w dorobku pieśniowym Beethovena zajmuje cykl An die ferne Geliebte (Do dalekiej ukochanej), skomponowany w roku 1816 do wierszy Aloisa Jeittelesa, młodego studenta medycyny. Ta przesycona żarliwym uczuciem poezja nie tylko znalazła u Beethovena silny oddźwięk, ale również skłoniła go do stworzenia nowatorskiej formy – cyklu pieśniowego (podjętej klika lat później przez Schuberta). Sześć dość krótkich wierszy przerodziło się pod jego piórem w jedną powiązaną wewnętrznie całość – kolejne utwory łączą się ze sobą bez cezur. Tę spójność formy podkreśla jeszcze powracająca w zakończeniu muzyka pieśni początkowej – to również zabieg bez precedensu, związany z treścią wierszy: poeta wierzy bowiem, że jego liryki pokonają dystans dzielący go od ukochanej.

Dotychczas przypuszczano, że utwór wyraża własne uczucia Beethovena, jednak ostatnie badania rzuciły na to nowe światło. Kompozycja została bowiem dedykowana protektorowi kompozytora, księciu Lobkowitzowi, któremu niedługo przed powstaniem cyklu zmarła żona – zapewne owa „daleka ukochana”. Potwierdza to też tytuł, który w autografie brzmiał nieco inaczej – An die entfernte Geliebte (Do oddalonej ukochanej).

Pierwsze szkice Das Liedchen von der Ruhe (Piosenka o spokoju) do słów Hermanna Ueltzena pochodzą jeszcze z lat pobytu w Bonn. Ostatecznie weszła ona w skład zbiorku 8 pieśni op. 52, wydanego w roku 1805. Jej refleksyjny ton odpowiada poważnej treści, wbrew określeniu „piosenka” – bo tytułowy „spoczynek” znajdzie poeta nie w objęciach miłości, lecz śmierci.

An die Geliebte (Do ukochanej) do wiersza wiedeńskiego dziennikarza Johanna Ludwiga Stolla to wdzięczny drobiazg, ofiarowany przez Beethovena jednej ze swych najwierniejszych adoratorek, Antonie Brentano.
