The ballet Pulcinella, K034 by the great Russian musician Igor Stravinsky was composed in twenty movements for solo vocal trio (soprano, tenor and bass) and woodwind instruments for two with picolo and without clarinets, two horns, trumpet, trombone and a complete section of string divided into functions of concertmaster and ripieno . It is observed in it that the author has in mind the structural organization of the concerto grossoBaroque, with its outstanding opposition of the string quartet to the rest of the orchestra's instruments, developing a simplified neoclassical language and a return to tonality inspired by fragments of works by Pergolesi, whose scores he got to know in Naples. His ingenious sense of rhythm is expressed by Stravinsky through a baroque orchestration filtered by neoclassicism that occurred in the first third of the 20th century, adapting here to the guidelines of the libretto and the choreography of Léonide Massine, who drew his protagonist from a dramatic character from La commedia dell'arte. Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, it included the participation of Pablo Ruiz Picasso who designed the costumes and sets. It premiered in Paris on May 15, 1920 under the musical direction of Ernest Ansermet. His plot deals with the jealousy that Pulcinella provokes in the boyfriends of his admirers until they try to kill him, but he, with a ruse, redirects the situation, achieving a happy ending for everyone.

Nothing better to understand the aesthetic concern that this work contains than this sincere comment by the composer: “Pulcinella was the swan song of my Swiss years. It was composed in a small attic in the Maison Bornand de Morges, a room packed with a cymbal, a piano, a harmonium, and a whole battery of percussion instruments. I started composing on Pergolesi's own manuscripts, as if I were correcting an old work of mine, without preconceived aesthetic ideas or attitudes about the result. Pulcinella was my discovery of the past, the epiphany through which all my late work became possible, a look back, of course, the first of many love affairs in that direction, but it was also a look in the mirror.

Presented in its final version by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes Company at the Alhambra Theater in London on July 22, 1919 with the choreographic direction of Léonide Massine, the musical by Ernest Ansermet and the sets by Pablo Picasso, the ballet El Three-cornered hat by Manuel de Falla produces a great effect due to its popular Spanish origin stylized in its neoclassical form, which has a special appeal for the listener, thus becoming one of the references of the author's production by being in a prominent position within the classical ballet repertoire of the 20th century. With a libretto by Gregorio Martínez Sierra and his wife María de la O Lejárraga, it is based on an adaptation of the novel El corregidor y la molineraof Accitano Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. You need an instrumental staff made up of three flutes and picolo, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, piano, celesta, and a complete string section. It premiered in Madrid on April 5, 1921 at the Teatro Real with general success and some minor criticism for its modernity.

El ballet Pulcinella, K034 del gran músico ruso Ígor Stravinski fue compuesto en veinte movimientos para trío vocal solista (soprano, tenor y bajo) e instrumentos viento-madera a dos con pícolo y sin clarinetes, dos trompas, trompeta, trombón y completa sección de cuerda dividida en funciones de concertino y ripieno. Se observa en él que el autor tiene presente la organización estructural del concerto grosso barroco, con su destacada oposición del cuarteto de cuerda al resto de instrumentos de la orquesta, desarrollando un simplificado lenguaje neoclásico y un retorno a la tonalidad que le inspiraban fragmentos de obras de Pergolesi, cuyas partituras llegó a conocer en Nápoles. Su ingenioso sentido del ritmo lo expresa Stravinski a través de una orquestación barroca tamizada por el neoclasicismo que se dio en el primer tercio del siglo XX, adaptándose aquí a las pautas del libreto y la coreografía de Léonide Massine, que dibujó su protagonista a partir de un personaje dramático de La commedia dell’arte. Encargado por Serguéi Diáguilev, se contó con la participación de Pablo Ruiz Picasso que diseñó el vestuario y los decorados. Se estrenó en París el 15 de mayo de 1920 bajo la dirección musical de Ernest Ansermet. Su argumento trata de los celos que provoca Pulcinella en los novios de sus admiradoras hasta pretender matarlo, pero éste, con un ardid, reconduce la situación logrando un final feliz para todos.

Nada mejor para entender la inquietud estética que encierra esta obra que este sincero comentario del compositor: “Pulcinella fue el canto del cisne de mis años suizos. Fue compuesta en una pequeña buhardilla de la Maison Bornand de Morges, una sala atestada por un címbalo, un piano, un armonio y toda una batería de instrumentos de percusión. Empecé componiendo sobre los propios manuscritos de Pergolesi, como si estuviera corrigiendo una obra antigua mía, sin ideas ni actitudes estéticas preconcebidas sobre el resultado. Pulcinella fue mi descubrimiento del pasado, la epifanía a través de la cual se hizo posible toda mi obra tardía, una mirada hacia atrás, por supuesto, la primera de muchas aventuras amorosas en esa dirección, pero también fue una mirada en el espejo”.

Presentado en su versión definitiva por la Compañía de los Ballets Rusos de Serguéi Diáguilev en el Teatro Alhambra de Londres el 22 de julio de 1919 con la dirección coreográfica de Léonide Massine, la musical de Ernest Ansermet y los decorados de Pablo Picasso, el ballet El sombrero de tres picos de Manuel de Falla produce un gran efecto por su popular origen español estilizado en su forma neoclásica, que tiene un especial atractivo para el oyente, convirtiéndose así en una de las referencias de la producción del autor al situarse en una posición destacada dentro del repertorio balletístico clásico del siglo XX. Con libreto de Gregorio Martínez Sierra y su esposa María de la O Lejárraga, está basado en una adaptación de la novela El corregidor y la molinera del accitano Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. Necesita una plantilla instrumental integrada por tres flautas y pícolo, dos oboes, corno inglés, dos clarinetes, dos fagotes, cuatro trompas, tres trompetas, tres trombones, tuba, timbales, percusión, arpa, piano, celesta y completa sección de cuerda. Se estrenó en Madrid el 5 de abril de 1921 en el Teatro Real con éxito en general y alguna pequeña crítica por su modernidad.
