Čo-Čo-San, mladá japonská nevesta amerického námorného dôstojníka Pinkertona, zistí, že jej romantická idylka je zničená, keď ju krátko po svadbe ženích opustí. Žije však v nádeji, že sa jedného dňa vráti. O tri roky neskôr Čo-Čo-San a jej syn uvidia v prístave Pinkertonovu loď. S nadšením očakáva jeho návštevu – keď sa však Pinkerton a jeho americká manželka Kate dozvedia sa o synovej existencii, požiadajú, aby si chlapca mohli vziať a vychovávať ho v Amerike. Čo-Čo-San sa rozlúči so synom a vezme si život.

Cio-Cio-San, die junge japanische Braut des amerikanischen Marineoffiziers Pinkerton, erfährt, dass ihre romantische Idylle zerstört ist, als sie kurz nach der Hochzeit von ihrem Bräutigam verlassen wird. Sie lebt jedoch in der Hoffnung, dass er eines Tages zurückkehrt. Drei Jahre später sehen Cio-Cio-San und ihr Sohn im Hafen Pinkertons Schiff. Mit Begeisterung erwarten sie seinen Besuch – als jedoch Pinkerton und seine amerikanische Ehefrau Kate von der Existenz des gemeinsamen Sohnes von Cio-Cio-San und Pinkerton erfahren, bitten sie darum, den Jungen mitnehmen zu dürfen um ihn in Amerika großzuziehen. Cio-Cio-San verabschiedet sich von ihrem Sohn und nimmt sich das Leben.

Cio-Cio-San, the young Japanese bride of U.S. naval officer Pinkerton, found out her romantic idyll shattered when her groom abandoned her shortly after their wedding. But she lived in the hope that one day he would return. Three years later, Cio-Cio-San and her son saw Pinkerton's boat in the harbour. She eagerly anticipated his visit - but when Pinkerton and his American wife Kate learned of their son's existence, they asked to be allowed to take the boy and raise him in America. Cio-Cio-San parted with her son and took her own life.
 
Giacomo Puccini's most popular opera is a work of his greatest creative period, a fascinating waterfall of melodious invention and brilliant mastery of musical drama. The tragic story of a Japanese geisha still moves audiences around the world today.
