Don Giovanni nie je len príbehom o potrestanom hriešnikovi, a nie je ani prostou hudobnou veselohrou. Je jedinečným dramatickým dielom, v ktorom aj zdanlivo typické komediálne situácie, aké v iných operách vyznievajú ľahko a nezáväzne, pôsobia drsne a stupňujú celkové napätie. Giovanniho nakoniec stihne trest, aj keď napokon zostáva otvorená otázka, kto ho vlastne odsúdil a potrestal: Boh, ľudia, či, ako naznačuje Jozef Bednárik, režisér titulu – jeho vlastné vyprahnuté vnútro? Hoci Mozart v ničom nevybočuje z klasicistického kompozičného štýlu, nijako nenarúša prísnu štýlovú „regulu“, predsa len dáva dielu jasný punc originality, aký sa v opernej literatúre neopakuje.

Don Giovanni is not merely a story of a punished sinner, or a simplistic musical comedy. It is a unique dramatic piece. The seemingly typical comedy situations that come across in other operas as light and non-engaging, are harsh here and gradate the overall tension. Giovanni faces punishment, though the question remains open about who actually sentenced and punished him: God, people or – as hinted by the director Jozef Bednárik – his own arid interior? Even though Mozart in no way moves away from the classicistic composition style and doesn’t distort its strict dictum, he still awards the oeuvre a distinct stamp of originality that is inimitable in operatic opus.

Don Giovanni ist nicht nur eine Geschichte von der Bestrafung eines Sünders und es ist auch kein einfältiges musikalisches Lustspiel. Es handelt sich um ein einzigartiges dramatisches Werk, in dem auch scheinbar komische Situationen, die in anderen Opern leicht und unverbindlich ausfallen, herb wirken und zur Steigerung der gesamten Spannung beitragen. Giovanni bekommt schließlich seine Strafe, obgleich es offen bleibt, wer ihn eigentlich verurteilt und bestraft hat: Gott, Menschen oder – wie von Jozef Bednárik, dem Regisseur, angedeutet – sein eigenes verkümmertes inneres Ich? Obwohl Mozart in nichts von dem klassizistischen Stil abweicht, in keiner Weise die strenge „Stilregel“ verletzt, verleiht er dem Werk trotzdem ein klares Siegel der Originalität, das in der Opernliteratur einzigartig ist.
