Die Uraufführung von Richard Strauss’ achter Oper INTERMEZZO löste bei Kritik und Publikum Irritationen aus: Statt auf mythische oder antike Stoffe zurückzugreifen, hatte der Komponist diesmal in kaum verhüllter Form sein eigenes Eheleben auf die Bühne gebracht und damit die Grenze zwischen Privatem und Öffentlichem provokativ überschritten. Übersehen wurde dabei, dass Strauss mit INTERMEZZO wieder einmal zeigte, dass er die aktuellen Trends des Musiktheaters seiner Zeit nicht nur aufmerksam verfolgte, sondern sie auch in sein persönliches Ausdrucksspektrum integrierte. Denn tatsächlich ist INTERMEZZO Strauss’ Antwort auf das Bedürfnis des Publikums der Zwanziger Jahre, neue, „moderne“ Opernstoffe auf der Bühne zu erleben, und steht daher in einer Reihe mit den Zeitopern von „Avantgardisten“ wie Arnold Schönberg (VON HEUTE AUF MORGEN) und Paul Hindemith (NEUES VOM TAGE). Anders als diese bleibt Strauss jedoch seiner klassisch-tonalen Tonsprache auch bei diesem Stoff treu und schafft vor allem mit der Hauptpartie der Komponistengattin Christine ein weiteres Exemplar seiner berühmten, mit silbrigen Kantilenen strahlenden Sopranpartien.

Und wie sich hinter dieser Christine Strauss’ Gattin Pauline verbirgt, so steckt auch in ihrem Bühnengatten, dem gefragten Kapellmeister Robert Storch, Richard Strauss selbst – und auch die Verwechslung, die die Ehe der beiden an den Rand des Scheiterns bringt, beruht auf einem tatsächlichen Vorfall. Es ist, wie oft in Komödien, ein fehlgeleiteter Brief einer Frau von moralisch zweifelhaftem Ruf, der Christine zur festen Überzeugung gelangen lässt, dass ihr Mann sie betrügt. Erst nach Aufklärung des Missverständnisses stellt sich wieder der häusliche Frieden ein. Doch ist dieser Vorfall in INTERMEZZO eher ein Anlass, das facettenreiche und psychologisch einfühlsame Porträt einer Frau zu zeichnen, die mit ihrem unausgefüllten Dasein hadert, sich andererseits aber auch durch ihre Rolle als fürsorgliche Ehefrau eines erfolgreichen Musikers definiert.


Zur Inszenierung
An der Deutschen Oper Berlin ist INTERMEZZO der Mittelteil einer Richard-Strauss-Trilogie, in der Regisseur Tobias Kratzer verschiedene Stadien einer Paarbeziehung unter die Lupe nimmt. Nachdem in ARABELLA die Schwierigkeiten des Beginns Thema waren, widmet sich INTERMEZZO nun den „Mühen der Ebene“. Und wie in ARABELLA entdeckt Kratzer auch hier eine Modernität, die den Stoff auch für das 21. Jahrhundert interessant macht: Auf der einen Seite die Frau, die nach einem Lebensinhalt jenseits der Gattinnenrolle sucht und sich doch nicht von ihrem Mann lösen kann, auf der anderen Seite der Mann, der seine Dominanz auch dadurch demonstriert, indem er seine Frau zur Kunstfigur macht und dadurch seine Sicht der Beziehung verewigt. Denn nicht zuletzt setzt Strauss hier dem eigenen Künstlertum in Gestalt umfangreicher sinfonischer Zwischenspiele ein Denkmal – und auch das wird Thema der Inszenierung sein.

About the work
Audiences exiting the theatre after the world premiere of Richard Strauss’s eighth opera INTERMEZZO felt wrong-footed and out-of-sorts. Instead of drawing on classical material or mythology, the composer had served up a straight story with him and his wife as characters, showing contempt for the boundary between private life and literary work. What they hadn’t realised was that Strauss had once again demonstrated that he was not only hip to musical-theatre trends but could also make them his own: for INTERMEZZO is Strauss’s response to 1920s audiences’ desire for “modern” opera subjects and can be seen as part of a line of avant-garde works by the likes of Arnold Schönberg (VON HEUTE AUF MORGEN) and Paul Hindemith (NEUES VOM TAGE). Unlike them, however, Strauss remains true to his classical sound and creates another of his famous soprano roles, shimmering with cantilenas, in the form of the main character, Christine, the fictional composer’s wife.

And in the same way that Christine represents Strauss’s real-life wife Pauline, so the successful kapellmeister Robert Storch stands in as Richard Strauss himself. Even the misunderstanding that almost destroys the fictional marriage is based on fact. The old comic device, a seductive letter from a woman of dubious virtue that falls into the wrong hands, leads Christine to believe that her husband is two-timing her. The misapprehension is cleared up and everything ends happily, yet the INTERMEZZO incident is more a way of painting the complex, sensitive picture of a woman who is unfulfilled but also aware that she is defined by her role as the caring spouse of a successful musician.


About the production
INTERMEZZO is the middle element in a Richard Strauss trilogy running at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in which director Tobias Kratzer shines a spotlight on phases in the trajectory of a relationship. Following on from ARABELLA, which explored the difficulties of courtship, INTERMEZZO studies the “wearisome lowlands”. And as with ARABELLA Kratzer makes out a modernity in the material that transfers well to the 21st century: on the one hand we have a woman looking for meaning beyond that of a wife but unable to make the break from her husband; on the other hand the real-life husband reinforcing his patriarchal role by creating a character based on his wife, thereby immortalising his own view of the relationship. Because Strauss is also creating a monument to his own artistry in the form of complex symphonic interludes – another subject explored by the production.
