There’s a distinct flavour of Liszt about the richly textured chromaticism of Bartók’s Op. 1 Rhapsody, first published in 1909; especially when heard next to Liszt’s final Transcendental Étude of fiftyish years earlier, ‘Chasse neige,’ whose tremolo and swirling chromatic figures depict a snow storm. Liszt’s Vallée d’Obermann is equally chromatic and pictorial; inspired by a French novel about a recluse who retreats to the Swiss Alps for nature-inspired existential musings, its initial descending left-hand idea provides the material for the ensuing restless music. Fauré’s thematically unified Nocturne No. 6 of 1894 is closer to the world of Liszt than to Chopin, despite its title. Similarly it’s Liszt, specifically his Faust-themed works, hovering behind Rachmaninoff’s grand-scale First Piano sonata of 1907. Initially titled ‘Faust,’ its three movements represent Faust, Gretchen and Mephistopheles, the latter complete with Dies irae motif. Finally, Brahms’s transcription of Bach’s D minor Chaconne, a technical study for the left-hand, is no less poetry-imbued for not being programmatic.

Le chromatisme richement tissé de la Rhapsodie de l’opus 1 de Bartók, publiée pour la première fois en 1909, évoque clairement l’influence de Liszt. Elle se manifeste particulièrement lorsque l’on compare cette œuvre à la dernière Étude transcendantale de Liszt, « Chasse neige », datant d’une cinquantaine d’années plus tôt. Dans cette dernière, le trémolo et les figures chromatiques tourbillonnantes dépeignent de manière captivante une tempête de neige. La Vallée d’Obermann de Liszt se distingue par son caractère remarquablement chromatique et pictural. Inspirée d’un roman français sur les Alpes suisses, son idée initiale descendante à la main gauche fournit la matière pour la musique agitée qui suit. Le Nocturne N° 6 de 1894 de Fauré, thématiquement unifié, est plus proche de l’univers de Liszt que de celui de Chopin, malgré son titre. La grandiose Première Sonate pour piano de Rachmaninoff, datant de 1907, est également fortement influencée par Liszt, en particulier par ses œuvres sur le thème de Faust. Initialement intitulée « Faust », ses trois mouvements représentent Faust, Gretchen et Méphistophélès, ce dernier étant complété par le motif Dies irae. Enfin, la transcription par Brahms de la Chaconne en ré mineur de Bach, étude technique pour la main gauche, ne manque pas de poésie, bien qu’elle ne soit pas programmée de manière narrative.
