On May 17, 1893, the only performance of Maurice Maeterlinck's recently written play Pelléas et Mélisande took place at the Bouff Theater in Paris. The production was organized by the admirer of the playwright, the famous actor Aurélien Lugné-Po, who played the role of Prince Golo. The costumes, according to the wishes of the author, were sewn in the spirit of Memling, the scenery resembled Pre-Raphaelite paintings, a transparent tulle curtain trembled between the hall and the stage. The variant of the legend of Tristan and Iseult unfolded as if in a dream. In the hall, among the invited spectators - the poets Mallarmé and Henri de Regnier, the artists Whistler and Lerolle - was also 30-year-old Claude Debussy. He had long been looking for a plot for a possible opera.

While still a student at the conservatory, when asked by his composition teacher Ernest Guiraud who could be his librettist, Debussy replied: “The one who does not finish speaking. I could add mine to his dream - that's the ideal. No specific country, no era. <…> There is too much singing at the opera these days. Musical clothes are unnecessarily heavy. You should only sing when you need to. Semitones. Grisaille. No development for the sake of development. Long-term development is not compatible with words. I dream of short poems, moving scenes. I don't care about the three unities! I need scenes that are diverse in place and character, where the characters do not rant about their existence, fate, and so on. The answers given so presciently describe "Pelléas" that when the text of the quoted conversation was published many years later, it was just right to doubt:

Pelléas is a drama where little is said, much is silent, but silence is more eloquent than words, it seems to be begging to be filled with the music of forebodings, doubts, suspicions, insights. Debussy didn't even need to create a libretto. Maeterlinck's play, with the exception of three scenes, is set by him to music word for word. The composer began to compose with a culmination - with an explanation of the characters before parting. From the scene where, after the explosion of feelings and the confession of Pelléas “I love you,” Mélisande, in complete silence, barely audibly answers on one note: “Me too.”

In search of an adequate musical language, the composer complained to his friends that "all this is too reminiscent of a duet of Mr. So-and-so or who knows who else, the ghost of old Klingsor evokes." He remembered the Wagnerian hero not by chance. Debussy was poisoned by the Wagnerian drama and, finding nothing comparable in modern French and Italian opera, focused only on Bayreuth. Pelléas is an answer to Wagner in the space of a similar plot. Where Wagner makes his heroes explain themselves for half an hour and say everything many times, Debussy has only bashful remarks, understatement, half hints. To the dense sonority of the Wagnerian orchestra, Debussy prefers a sparse pointillist palette, with frequent divisi of strings, a web of solos and mixes. To isolate the timbres, he even considered whether to seat the orchestral groups so that the cellos are next to the bassoons, and whether to “separate the wind instruments” so that they sound like an ensemble of soloists. He prefers static sequences to tense harmonic development, as if stopping musical time: it is no coincidence that Maeterlinck's pieces were called "dramas of expectation". Debussy avoids loudness and pathos - his music rarely goes beyond the boundaries of the piano. The leitmotifs of the characters appear only in the orchestra, but not in the vocal parts. The Debussy critic mockingly wrote that the Wagnerian heroes, singing their leitmotifs, are similar to a person who, giving a business card, excitedly recites its content. He prefers static sequences to tense harmonic development, as if stopping musical time: it is no coincidence that Maeterlinck's pieces were called "dramas of expectation". At the premiere of the opera, the absence of songs and dances, choirs and ensembles in the score, the same semitones, the chemistry of microphrases, the finest sound recording that Debussy cared about, left the audience bewildered. And when Mélisande, in the second act, to the question of Golod why she was crying, answered: “I am unhappy here,” the audience quipped gloomily: “We too.” In Pelléas, dramatic energy builds up little by little. The first half of the opera moves in an emotional range between "quiet" and "very quiet". Tenderness, fear, despair, cruelty burst to the surface only by the third or fourth act in stormy dramatic scenes, as, for example, in the scene of jealousy, where Golo makes his little son peep out the window at the prince's wife and brother. The censors demanded that this scene be removed so as not to shock the family audience of the opera comedian, but in the end the author sacrificed only 14 bars. Pelléas seemed monotonous to both Richard Strauss and Rimsky-Korsakov. But for the French, Debussy's opera became a matter of national pride, and in the reverse perspective, its appreciation only increased. Pierre Boulez and Olivier Messiaen counted all the music of the twentieth century from April 30, 1902, from the day of the premiere of Pelléas et Mélisande.

Еще будучи студентом консерватории, на вопрос своего учителя по композиции Эрнеста Гиро, кто мог бы быть его либреттистом, Дебюсси ответил: «Тот, кто не договаривает до конца. Я бы смог добавить к его мечте свою – вот идеал. Ни конкретной страны, ни эпохи. <…> Нынче в опере слишком много поют. Музыкальные одежды излишне тяжелы. Надо петь только тогда, когда в этом есть необходимость. Полутона. Гризайль. Никаких разработок ради разработок. Длительное развитие не сочетается со словами. Я мечтаю о кратких стихах, подвижных сценах. Плевать мне на три единства! Мне нужны сцены, разнообразные по месту и характеру, где герои не разглагольствуют о своем существовании, участи и прочем». Приведенные ответы настолько провидчески описывают «Пеллеаса», что когда текст процитированной беседы спустя много лет был опубликован, впору оказалось усомниться: а не мистификация ли это?

«Пеллеас» – драма, где мало говорят, много молчат, но молчание красноречивее слов, оно словно просится быть заполненным музыкой предчувствий, сомнений, подозрений, прозрений. Дебюсси даже не требовалось создавать либретто. Пьеса Метерлинка, за исключением трех сцен, положена им на музыку слово в слово. Сочинять композитор начал с кульминации – с объяснения героев перед разлукой. С той сцены, где после взрыва чувств и признания Пеллеаса «Я люблю тебя» Мелизанда в полной тишине еле слышно отвечает на одной ноте: «Я тоже».

Пребывая в поисках адекватного музыкального языка, композитор жаловался друзьям, что «все это слишком напоминает дуэт г-на такого-то или невесть кого либо же вызывает призрак старого Клингзора». Вагнеровского героя он поминал не случайно. Дебюсси был отравлен вагнеровской драмой и, не находя ничего сопоставимого в современном французском и итальянском оперном театре, ориентировался только на Байройт. «Пеллеас» – это ответ Вагнеру в пространстве похожего сюжета. Там, где Вагнер заставляет своих героев объясняться в течение получаса и говорить всё по многу раз, у Дебюсси – лишь стыдливые реплики, недосказанность, полунамеки. Плотной звучности вагнеровского оркестра Дебюсси предпочитает разреженную пуантилистскую палитру, с частыми divisi струнных, паутиной соло и микстов. Для обособления тембров он даже обдумывал, не рассадить ли оркестровые группы так, чтобы виолончели оказались рядом с фаготами, и не «разлучить ли духовые», чтобы они звучали как ансамбль солистов. Напряженному гармоническому развитию он предпочитает статические последовательности, словно останавливая музыкальное время: метерлинковские пьесы неслучайно называли «драмами ожидания». Дебюсси избегает громогласности и пафоса – его музыка редко выходит за границы пиано. Лейтмотивы героев появляются только в оркестре, но не в вокальных партиях. Дебюсси-критик насмешливо писал, что вагнеровские герои, распевающие свои лейтмотивы, похожи на человека, который, отдавая визитную карточку, взволнованно декламирует ее содержание.

На премьере оперы отсутствие песен и танцев, хоров и ансамблей в партитуре, те самые полутона, химия микрофраз, тончайшая звукопись, которые заботили Дебюсси, оставили слушателей в недоумении. И когда Мелизанда во втором акте на вопрос Голо, почему она плачет, ответила: «Я здесь несчастна», в зале мрачно сострили: «Мы тоже». В «Пеллеасе» драматическая энергия накапливается исподволь. Первая половина оперы идет в эмоциональном диапазоне между «тихо» и «очень тихо». Лишь к третьему-четвертому акту в бурных драматических сценах на поверхность вырываются нежность, страх, отчаяние, жестокость, как, например, в сцене ревности, где Голо заставляет маленького сына подглядывать в окно за женой и братом принца. Эту сцену цензура потребовала убрать, чтобы не шокировать семейную публику Опера-комик, но в итоге автор пожертвовал лишь 14 тактами. Монотонным казался «Пеллеас» и Рихарду Штраусу, и Римскому-Корсакову. Но для французов опера Дебюсси стала предметом национальной гордости, и в обратной перспективе ее оценка лишь возрастала. Пьер Булез и Оливье Мессиан вели отсчет всей музыки ХХ века с 30 апреля 1902 года, со дня премьеры «Пеллеаса и Мелизанды».
