The only musical drama completed by Claude Debussy, performed in 1902, Pelléas and Mélisandemarked the opening of the new century and inaugurated, with a profound change in style and language, the opera house of the twentieth century. In order to arrive at such a new and revolutionary model of work, the author had to work on it for ten years, starting from his first encounter with the prose drama of Maurice Maeterlinck, standard-bearer of literary symbolism. Rarely represented, the opera is seen in Modena as a production born at the Teatro Regio di Parma and aired for Rai Cultura on Rai 5. Direction, sets and costumes are signed by the Franco-Canadian creative team Barbe & Doucet who conceive an installation circular, inspired by late nineteenth-century Spiritism, in which the characters are immersed in limbo, between natural, wooded and aquatic scenic elements, marbles that evoke monumental cemeteries, self-propelled islands, panels and backdrops in continuous movement. A reality straddling different worlds, from which it does not seem possible to escape, where each element has a symbolic meaning. The musical part of the show is entrusted to Marco Angius, international reference director for the contemporary musical repertoire.

Unico dramma musicale portato a compimento da Claude Debussy, rappresentato nel 1902, Pelléas e Mélisande ha segnato l’apertura del nuovo secolo e inaugurava, con un profondo mutamento di stile e di linguaggio, il teatro lirico del Novecento. Per poter pervenire a un modello d’opera così nuovo e rivoluzionario, l’autore dovette lavorarvi per ben dieci anni, a partire dal suo primo incontro col dramma in prosa di Maurice Maeterlinck, alfiere del simbolismo letterario. Raramente rappresentata, l’opera si vede a Modena una produzione nata al Teatro Regio di Parma e andata in onda per Rai Cultura su Rai 5. Regia, scene e i costumi sono firmate dal del team creativo franco-canadese Barbe & Doucet che concepiscono un allestimento circolare, che si ispira allo Spiritismo tardo ottocentesco, in cui i personaggi sono immersi in un limbo, tra elementi scenici naturali, boschivi e acquatici, marmi che evocano cimiteri monumentali, isole semoventi, pannelli e fondali in continuo movimento. Una realtà a cavallo tra diversi mondi, da cui non sembra esser possibile sfuggire, dove ciascun elemento ha un significato simbolico. La parte musicale dello spettacolo è affidata a Marco Angius, direttore di riferimento internazionale per il repertorio musicale contemporaneo.
