Devica Orleanska - kako nastaja

Even if this opera is not accepted as a work of art, it will be for me," Peter Iljič wrote in a letter to his brother Modest. The original opera The Virgin of Orleans (1881, St. Petersburg), written in the style of the great French opera, is the composer's fifth opera and the first to be performed outside his homeland - in Prague in 1882. In it the pseudo-historical background of the story of the fate of 15th-century French heroine is intertwined with a mixture of majestic luxury and melodramatic passages. The score for a typical romantic orchestra, a combination of French and German style and contemporary Russian concert music, also reflected the composer's vision that the music of the opera should be liked by a wide circle of people. The libretto draws on material from Schiller's play of the same name from 1801, as well as on many other sources from the world of art and biographical works. John of Orleans, who in the Hundred Years' War led French troops to victory over the English and liberated the inhabitants of Orléans, consequently helped Charles VII. became King of France. The director of the play is Frank Van Laecke, who has directed the successful plays Katja Kabanova and Lucia di Lammermoor on our stage in recent seasons, and we have entrusted the musical direction to Simon Krečič.
