L’expressivité de la lyre romantique résonne dans les Quatre Lieder de Strauss comme dans la « Titan » de Mahler, toute pénétrée de l’esprit du Lied. Répondant à ces chefs-d’œuvre de poésie, Spira d’Unsuk Chin s’affirme comme une lumineuse ode au son.

En regard de la veine plus littéraire de Strauss et Mahler, Spira d’Unsuk Chin s’impose comme un captivant et sculptural paysage sonore qui cherche à retranscrire la vie intérieure du son. Ce concerto pour orchestre miniature n’est pas sans rappeler la magie polyphonique d’un Ligeti.
Composés autour de 1894 en cadeau de mariage à son épouse Pauline, les Lieder op. 27 démontrent la plasticité de l’écriture straussienne, capable de passer de la rêverie schumanienne (Morgen) au wagnérisme poignant, tout en somptuosité lyrique, de Cäcilie. Littéraire, aussi, la Symphonie « Titan » de Mahler, dont le titre renvoie au roman de Jean Paul Richter, et qui célèbre en secret, avec la citation de la célèbre chanson Frère Jacques et de mélodies des Chants d’un compagnon errant, l’esprit romantique du Lied.

The expressiveness of the romantic lyre resonates throughout Strauss’s Four Lieder and Mahler’s ‘Titan’ Symphony, all steeped in the Lied spirit. In counterpoint to these poetic masterpieces, Unsuk Chin’s Spira rings out as a luminous ode to sound.

Alongside the more literary vein with Strauss and Mahler, Unsuk Chin’s Spira offers a sculptural and captivating soundscape that seeks to transcribe the inner life of sound. This concerto for mini-orchestra recalls the polyphonic magic of a Ligeti.
Composed around 1894 as a wedding gift for his wife Pauline, Strauss’s Lieder op. 27 show the plasticity of his composing, passing from Schumanian reverie with Morgen, to poignant Wagnerism with the lyric sumptuousness of Cäcilie. Also literary is Mahler’s ‘Titan’ Symphony, titled after the novel by Jean Paul Richter, and which secretly celebrates the romantic Lied spirit with quotations from the famous song Frère Jacques and melodies from Songs of a Wayfarer.
