Met het Groot Omroepkoor, het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest en vocale solisten luidt chef-dirigent Karina Canellakis het nieuwe seizoen van het AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert in met Rachmaninovs De klokken. Op het programma ook een nieuw werk van Calliope Tsoupaki.

Met het Groot Omroepkoor, het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest en chef-dirigent Karina Canellakis op de bok opent het AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert het nieuwe seizoen als een klok. Letterlijk, want op het programma staat Rachmaninovs koorsymfonie De klokken. Als tekst nam Rachmaninov het beroemde gedicht The Bells van Edgar Alan Poe, dat hij op de voet volgt. Het is een prachtige lijn van twinkelende belletjes, naar huwelijksklokken en alarmbellen, om te eindigen met de klokken van de dood. Zoals in zoveel van zijn werken, en hier helemaal van toepassing, gebruikt Rachmaninov in de finale het bekende dies irae-motief uit de gregoriaanse dodenmis.

Sibelius en Tsoupaki
Ook voor de pauze heeft het concert veel te bieden. Met Sibelius verkennen we de Noord-Europese mythologie. In Luonnotar, met een zeer virtuoze sopraansolo gezongen door de Oekraïense sopraan Olga Kulchynska, gebruikt hij een tekst uit het traditionele Finse heldenepos Kalevala. In En Saga, een van zijn eerste grote orkestrale werken, verkent Sibelius de sfeer van de IJslandse Edda.
Het thema van dit seizoen, 'Wanderlust' is voor Calliope Tsoupaki aanleiding voor een nieuwe compositie die ze voor dit concert zal schrijven: 'Het verlangen om te reizen, om te vertrekken naar een verre onbekende plek, is de basis van het verlangen om muziek te maken.'

With the Groot Omroepkoor, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and chief conductor Karina Canellakis on the baton, the AVROTROS Friday Concert opens the new season like clockwork. Literally, because the program features Rachmaninov's choral symphony The Bells. As his text, Rachmaninov took Edgar Alan Poe's famous poem The Bells. It is a beautiful line from twinkling bells, to wedding bells and alarm bells, ending with the bells of death. As in so many of his works, and entirely applicable here, Rachmaninov uses the familiar dies irae motif from the Gregorian Mass of the Dead in the finale.

Sibelius and Tsoupaki
The concert also has much to offer before intermission. With Sibelius, we explore Northern European mythology. In Luonnotar, with a highly virtuosic soprano solo sung by Ukrainian soprano Olga Kulchynska, he uses a text from the traditional Finnish heroic epic Kalevala. In En Saga, one of his first major orchestral works, Sibelius explores the atmosphere of the Icelandic Edda.
This season's theme, "Wanderlust," prompted Calliope Tsoupaki to write a new composition for this concert: "The desire to travel, to leave for a distant unknown place, is the basis of the desire to make music.
