Erste Einblicke in die Neuproduktion von John Adams' NIXON IN CHINA: Interviews mit Regisseur Marco Štorman und Tenor Matthias Klink

„Eine der intelligentesten Inszenierungen, die derzeit auf Opernbühnen zu erleben ist“, befand der SWR nach der Premiere von John Adams’ Nixon in China im Jahr 2019. Regisseur Marco Štorman inszeniert die Minimal-Music-Oper als Dekonstruktions-Revue über die Macht der Bilder, die Politik der Inszenierung und die Inszenierung von Politik. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Staatsbesuch Richard Nixons bei Mao Tse-tung – neben der Mondlandung der Apollo-11-Mission drei Jahre zuvor eines der größten Medienereignisse der Zeit. Mit seiner Oper zielte Adams keineswegs auf eine oberflächliche oder karikierende Darstellung des Staatsbesuchs: Er wollte eine „heroische Oper“ über die Konstruktion von modernen Mythen schreiben – mit archetypischen Situationen und Figuren und nicht zuletzt mit hypnotischsuggestiver Musik.

“One of the most intelligent productions currently to be seen on opera stages!” (Bernd Künzig, SWR2) Director Marco Štorman stages Adam’s minimal music opera as a deconstruction review about the power of images, the politics of (self) staging and the staging of politics. Besides the landing on the moon by the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, Richard Nixon’s meeting with China’s leader Mao Zedong in February 1972 then represented one of the biggest media spectacles in history. It was not John Adam’s aim to create a superficial or even a caricaturing representation of Nixon’s visit when composing his opera. He attempted to create a „heroic opera“ about the construction of modern myths by using archetypical characters and situations.
