Buxtehude’s monumental cycle of seven cantatas, Membra Jesu Nostri, has come to be regarded as the first Lutheran oratorio. An astonishing work of searing intensity and heartrending beauty, each of its seven parts is addressed to a different part of Christ’s crucified body: the feet, knees, hands, sides, breast, heart, and face. In this collaboration between Dunedin Consort and the mighty Phantasm viols, Buxtehude’s masterpiece is paired with excerpts from Michael East’s collection of fantasias for viol consort, and with psalms and madrigals from Monteverdi’s sacred anthology, Selve morale e spirituale.
