The greatest Italian composer of the post-Verdian generation reached the maturity of a true opera composer after his first two operas, and all his works found a place in the recognized part of the opera repertoire. Some of his operas, moreover, enjoy the reputation of being the most popular operas ever written. Persistently and successfully achieving a compromise between his native Italian heritage and French and German influences, Puccini was the only one of his contemporaries who managed to rise creatively, growing with each new work into the most beloved representative of opera verism with a distinctive lyrical note. Najveći talijanski skladatelj postverdijanske generacije zrelost je istinskog opernog skladatelja dosegnuo već nakon svoje prve dvije opere, a sva su njegova djela našla mjesto u priznatom dijelu opernog repertoara. Neke od njegovih opera, štoviše, uživaju ugled najpopularnijih ikada napisanih opera. Uporno i uspješno postižući kompromis između svojega rodnoga talijanskog naslijeđa te francuskih i njemačkih utjecaja, Puccini se jedini od svojih suvremenika uspio kreativno uzdignuti, prerastajući svakim novim djelom u najomiljenijeg predstavnika opernog verizma s izrazitom lirskom notom. U nizu velikih junakinja koje će ga proslaviti - Mimi (La Bohème), Tosca, Madamme Butterfly - Manon Lescaut stoji na prvome mjestu, svjedočeći kako Puccinija ponajprije zanima istinska melodrama koja će mu omogućiti da na scenu iznese najdublje ljudske emocije, protkane tipično puccinijevskom melodikom, s jedne strane, te snažnom scenskom dramatikom, s druge.
