Gabriel Fauré a été formé à l’École Niedermeyer avec Camille Saint-Saëns pour professeur de piano. Son parcours est atypique et l’influence de ce compositeur aux mérites artistiques indiscutables est indéniable. Ses mélodies sont, à elles seules, une école de l’écriture vocale à laquelle la jeune génération ira abondamment puiser. Depuis son opus 1 Le Papillon et la fleur sur un poème de Victor Hugo en 1857 jusqu’au crépuscule de sa vie, Fauré n’a pas cessé d’explorer le genre de la mélodie française. On compte aujourd’hui 111 pièces de ce type à son catalogue.
