Depois de se ter cruzado com Goethe em 1812, Beethoven quis inspirar-se na obra literária do escritor, pelo qual nutria uma profunda admiração, baseando-se nela para criar a majestosa cantata para coro e orquestra Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt. Também Mendelssohn havia de conhecer Goethe muito cedo no seu percurso – musicando igualmente alguns dos seus poemas –, tendo o escritor declarado estar perante um prodígio comparável ao de Mozart. A criação de Mendelssohn seria, de igual modo, muito permeável à sua relação com a poesia, sendo a Sinfonia n.º 2, Lobgesang, um dos mais notáveis exemplos.
