Un voyage à travers les âges et les régions d’Europe centrale : Gustav Mahler, György Ligeti et Olga Neuwirth ­– pour la création française longtemps attendue de Masaot –, sont autant de musiciens de l’hétérogène, où les souvenirs de traditions écrites, comme de répertoires populaires, dialoguent sans souci d’exclusive.

À sa mort, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) laissa inachevée sa Dixième Symphonie, à l’exception de l’« Adagio » initial. Une crise, dont le manuscrit de cette œuvre porte des traces sublimement douloureuses, l’avait incité à consulter Freud. Celui-ci écrira de leur rencontre : « Ce fut comme si on avait creusé une profonde et unique tranchée à travers un édifice énigmatique. » Pour le centième anniversaire de sa mort, Olga Neuwirth reçut une commande, qu’elle ne put d’abord honorer en raison de ses engagements, mais à laquelle elle ne cessa de penser : Masaot, voyage ou histoire en hébreu, en hommage à la judéité de Mahler. Dans cette méditation sur la dissolution du temps et de la mémoire, le bassin du Danube d’un grand-père jamais connu devient carrousel de chants, terre d’une identité impossible, paysages d’héritages multiples. Parmi ces œuvres, les virtuoses, spirituels et pleins d’ironie Mysteries of the Macabre de György Ligeti (1923-2006), ainsi que son Concerto pour violon qui accumule les influences et les lient en un tout organique : géométrie fractale, polyphonies et polyrythmies du Sud-Est asiatique ou d’Afrique subsaharienne, techniques empruntées au Moyen Âge de Guillaume de Machaut…

A journey through the ages and the regions of Central Europe: Gustav Mahler, György Ligeti and Olga Neuwirth – for the long-awaited French creation of Masaot – are all musicians of the heterogeneous, where the memories of written traditions, such as of popular repertoires, dialogue without concern for exclusivity.

When he died, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) left his Tenth Symphony unfinished , except for the opening “Adagio”. A crisis, of which the manuscript of this work bears sublimely painful traces, had prompted him to consult Freud. This one will write of their meeting: “It was as if we had dug a deep and unique trench through an enigmatic building. For the hundredth anniversary of her death, Olga Neuwirth received an order, which at first she could not honor because of her commitments, but which she never stopped thinking about: Masaot, travel or story in Hebrew, in homage to Mahler's Jewishness. In this meditation on the dissolution of time and memory, the Danube basin of a never-known grandfather becomes a carousel of songs, land of an impossible identity, landscapes of multiple legacies. Among these works, the virtuoso, witty and full of irony Mysteries of the Macabre by György Ligeti (1923-2006), as well as his Violin Concerto which accumulates influences and links them into an organic whole: fractal geometry, polyphonies and polyrhythms from Southeast Asia or sub-Saharan Africa, techniques borrowed from the Middle Ages of Guillaume de Machaut…
