The Love Potion is Donizetti's first work to achieve European fame. It is distinguished among contemporary comic operas by its great subtlety and moodiness.

The plot uses the theme of a drink known from the Middle Ages  with the power to connect lovers (Tristan and Isolde), here transferred to the Italian province. The intrigue with inventiveness and freshness is led by music, which is very attractive in its variety and ingenuity in using operatic compositional means, in particular in writing out fast-paced dialogues between soloists and between soloists and the choir. In addition, there are motifs of Italian dances and folk melodies woven into the score.

At the same time, The Love Drink is a lyrical comedy and the feeling recalled in the opera's title resonates in the parts of Adina and Nemorin. All these moods and tones make up a dramatic and musical spectacle.

Napój miłosny jest pierwszym dziełem Donizettiego, które zdobyło europejską sławę. Spośród współczesnych oper komicznych wyróżnia się wielką subtelnością i nastrojowością.

W fabule wykorzystany został znany od średniowiecza motyw napoju o mocy łączenia kochanków (Tristan i Izolda), tu przeniesiony na włoską prowincję. Intrygę z inwencją i świeżością prowadzi muzyka, która jest bardzo atrakcyjna w swej rozmaitości i pomysłowości wykorzystywania operowych środków kompozycyjnych, w szczególności w rozpisaniu wartkich dialogów pomiędzy solistami i między solistami a chórem. Do tego dochodzą wplecione w partyturę motywy włoskich tańców i melodii ludowych.

Przy tym Napój miłosny jest komedią liryczną i uczucie przywołane w w tytule opery wybrzmiewa w partiach Adiny i Nemorina. Wszystkie te nastroje i tony składają się na zajmujący dramaturgicznie i muzycznie spektakl.
