L'elisir d'amore arrived at the São Carlos Theater on January 6, 1834. Prodigious melodic inspiration and enormous dramatic vigor made it one of the most beloved operas of all time. Written in just two weeks, profoundly romantic in the gesture of elevating a group of poor peasants to an almost main character, it handles figures and situations from the 18th century opera buffa with greatefficiency .

A central character is the peasant Nemorino – the most popular part of the score is even his aria « Una furtiva lagrima », already sung in our theater by stars such as Gigli, Tagliavini or Kraus. In love with Adina, deeming her unattainable (not least because she is also coveted by Sergeant Belcore), Nemorino resorts to the services of the charlatan Dulcamara, inventor of a miraculous elixir (rich in alcohol) that allows him to win hearts.

The main roles of this opera have been played by some of the most important Portuguese voices over the years. Adina will now be Rita Marques. Mário João Alves, the applauded performer of Nemorino in our theater and on other stages, signs the staging. Thus, a great tradition continues.

L’elisir d’amore chegou ao Teatro de São Carlos a 6 de janeiro de 1834. Uma inspiração melódica prodigiosa e um enorme vigor dramático fizeram dela uma das mais amadas óperas de sempre. Escrita em apenas duas semanas, profundamente romântica no gesto de elevar um grupo de pobres camponeses a personagem quase principal, ela maneja com grande eficácia figuras e situações da opera buffa do século XVIII.

Personagem fulcral é o camponês Nemorino – o mais popular trecho da partitura é mesmo a sua ária «Una furtiva lagrima», já cantada no nosso teatro por astros como Gigli, Tagliavini ou Kraus. Apaixonado por Adina, julgando-a inalcançável (até porque é também cobiçada pelo sargento Belcore), Nemorino recorre aos serviços do charlatão Dulcamara, inventor de um elixir miraculoso (rico em álcool) que permite conquistar os corações.

Os principais papéis desta ópera têm sido desempenhados por algumas das mais importantes vozes portuguesas ao longo dos anos. Adina será agora Rita Marques, que se estreia no papel. Mário João Alves, aplaudido intérprete de Nemorino, assina a encenação. Prossegue-se, assim, uma grande tradição
