The year was 1786 and on 1 May the first of the three masterpieces created by Mozart in collaboration with Lorenzo Da Ponte made its debut at the Burgtheater in Vienna: The Marriage of Figaro . The subject, taken from the well-known Le mariage de Figaro , penned by Beaumarchais in 1778, is particularly suited to Mozart due to the situations and characters involved which lend themselves to a psychological investigation in music without equal before then. The score is marked from the very first bars by an irrepressible vitality: the initial notes of the overture drag us into the crazy journéeof Figaro and his companions and from then on the music acquires such power that it becomes action itself through twists and turns, disguises, tricks, broken promises, unexpected revelations, loves that cause disturbance, but also nostalgia and torment, up to the conciliatory final of the fourth act which will restore the harmony and order of things. The show is taken from the historic staging that Jonathan Miller signed in 1992 and staged at the Pergola again directed by Zubin Mehta; already taken up during the 84th Maggio Musicale Festival again by Georg Rootering.

Correva l’anno 1786 e il 1º maggio debuttava al Burgtheater di Vienna il primo dei tre capolavori realizzati da Mozart in collaborazione con Lorenzo Da Ponte: Le nozze di Figaro. Il soggetto, tratto dal ben noto Le mariage de Figaro, vergato da Beaumarchais nel 1778, è particolarmente congeniale a Mozart per situazioni e personaggi in gioco che si prestano a un’indagine psicologica in musica senza eguali prima di allora. La partitura è segnata fin dalle primissime battute da una prorompente vitalità: le note iniziali dell’ouverture ci trascinano nella folle journée di Figaro e compagni e da lì in poi la musica acquista un potere tale da diventare essa stessa azione attraverso colpi di scena, travestimenti, tranelli, mancate promesse, rivelazioni inaspettate, amori che provocano turbamento, ma anche nostalgia e tormento, fino al conciliante finale del quarto atto che ristabilirà l’armonia e l’ordine delle cose. Lo spettacolo è ripreso dallo storico allestimento che Jonathan Miller firmò nel 1992 e andato in scena alla Pergola diretto sempre da Zubin Mehta; già ripreso nel corso dell' 84ºFestival del Maggio Musicale sempre da Georg Rootering.
