« Allô ! C'est toi ?... On avait coupé... Non, non, j'attendais. On sonnait, je décrochais et il n'y avait personne... Sans doute... Bien sûr... Tu as sommeil ?... Tu es bon d'avoir téléphoné... » Scène ordinaire de la vie amoureuse : une femme tente de joindre l'homme qu'elle aime mais la ligne téléphonique est capricieuse ce soir. Derrière les non-dits et les platitudes échangées sur la journée de la veille, une autre histoire se dessine en filigrane. Celle d'une rupture douloureuse qui ne passe pas, d'un mal de vivre doublé d'un besoin éperdu d'affection. Une histoire sublimement banale qui porte en elle la voix d'une humanité blessée. Mais si l'on pouvait remonter le temps, les mêmes causes produiraient-elles les mêmes conséquences ?
Monodrame poignant et avant-gardiste de Jean Cocteau, La Voix humaine accède en 1959 au rang de tragédie lyrique grâce au génie musical de Francis Poulenc - il aura fallu quarante ans d'amitié pour que les deux artistes se rencontrent enfin autour d'une œuvre commune. La soprano Patricia Petibon relève le défi de ce seule-en-scène exigeant avec la complicité de la cheffe Ariane Matiakh. Elle retrouve pour l'occasion l'univers réaliste et la précision poétique de la metteuse en scène Katie Mitchell qui offre à ce drame un nouvel épilogue cinématographique, porté par une puissante composition symphonique de l'Islandaise Anna Thorvaldsdottir, où se mêlent souvenirs vécus et réalité alternative dans une réminiscence impossible.

“Hello! Is it you? We were cut off... No, no, I waited. Someone rang. I hung up and there was no-one there. Are you sleepy? You are good to have called...” A familiar scene: a woman tries to get hold of her lover, but this evening the telephone line is playing up. Between unspoken words and the platitudes exchanged about the day, another story unfolds beneath the surface. A painful, unresolved break-up and an unhappy existence are compounded by an overwhelming need for affection. A beautifully banal story that conveys the voice of wounded humanity. But if we could turn back time, would the same actions yield the same results?
A touching and avant-gardist monologue by Jean Cocteau, The Human Voice was elevated to the ranks of tragic opera by musical genius Francis Poulenc—although it took forty years for the two friends to collaborate on a joint oeuvre. Soprano Patricia Petibon assumes the challenging role of the lone protagonist, ably assisted by conductor Ariane Matiakh. The realistic setting created by director Katie Mitchell has her trademark poetic precision that brings a fresh cinematographic epilogue to this drama accompanied by a commanding symphony from Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir, where past memories and an alternative reality are interwoven in a tale of impossible reminiscence.
