Donizetti premiered this opera in 1840 at the Opéra Comique in Paris with a book by Jean Francois Bayard and Henri Vernoy de Saint George.

It was a convulsive era of Napoleonic revolts, the proletariat was fed up with the nobility and upper bourgeoisie where social differences were getting bigger and bigger.

Donizetti used this event to ridicule with grace and entertainment this nobility and to awaken a heroic and amusing patriotism.

The composer gives an ambitious and graceful setting to the arrival of the 21st French Regiment in the Swiss Tyrol, led by Sergeant Sulpice who comes accompanied by a nineteen-year-old orphan, Marie , welcomed and adopted by the regiment as a barmaid and who ends up falling in love with the Tyrolean Tonio who enlists in the regiment just to be close to Marie.

The Tyrol was waiting for the entry of the 21st French Regiment, with great fear, and here we hear the beautiful prayer "SainteMadonne" of the women of the village in order to give them protection.

The patriotic sentiment that inspired the work meant that for a few years this opera was usually scheduled on July 14 to celebrate the anniversary of the Revolution.

This work is famous for the Aria of great technical difficulty and brilliance of the tenor "Ah, mes amisqueljour de fête" which contains 9 C de pit.

The jealousies of other composers who could not swallow the success of the musician from Parma, wanted to turn La Fille into a failure, but they did not succeed, the exaltation of the Motherland, united to the opera, turned Paris into the operatic center par excellence .lence

El sentimentpatriòtic que va desperarl’obra, va fer que habitualmentdurantuns bon grapatd’anys es programéstots el 14 de juliolaquestaòpera per festejar l’aniversari de la Revolució.
