[Don't forget to activate the subtitles in Portuguese!] Brazilian premiere of the opera Kátia Kabanová (1921), by Leoš Janáček (1854-1928), presented at Theatro São Pedro in August 2018, with Orquestra do Theatro, musical direction by the conductor Ira Levin and scenic direction by André Heller-Lopes. A masterpiece by Leoš Janáček, Kátia Kabanová is based on the play The Tempest, by Russian Aleksandr Ostróvsky (1823-1886), and was written for Kamila Stösslová, muse of the Czech composer at the end of his life. Married and 38 years younger than Janáček, Kamila inspires the title character, Katěrina: a woman torn between social obligation and desire, between a weak husband (and a sordid mother-in-law) and an adventurous love.
