The Wiener Symphoniker have decided to pay their respects to Alexander von Zemlinksy - friend, patron and teacher of Schönberg, Berg and Webern, and one of Vienna's leading musical figures of the 20th Century - by dedicating part of the concert programme in the second half of the season to the Austrian-born composer and conductor. The highlight of this series, which includes two concerts in Vienna's Musikverein, will be a performance of Zemlinsky's principal work, the Lyric Symphony, with soloists Anne Schwanewilms and Thomas Hampson. Inspired by Mahler's Lied von der Erde and Schonberg's Gurrelieder, the composition comprises seven songs to poems by the Indian Nobel Pize for Literature winner Rabindrath Tagore. These are expertly linked by breathtakingly orchestrated symphonic interludes. Zemlinsky's enchanting and sensational music is complimented by the addition of Strauss' virtuoso Oboe Concerto and Mozart's light-footed Symphony No. 32. Please note: This concert is presented as part of a cooperation between the Wiener Symphoniker and the Wiener Konzerthaus Society.
