The jazz band fiddler Jonny has his sights set on the violin of the famous violin virtuoso Daniello. Just when he can get hold of them in a Paris hotel, opera singer Anita, who is spending a night of love with Daniello, gets in his way, although she is still in a very fresh relationship with the composer Max. Without further ado, Jonny hides the instrument in Anita's banjo case and follows her to Max, where the thief can finally take possession of the violin. In the high Alps, all those involved meet again, as if by chance - and Jonny plays!

In the Weimar Republic, perhaps the most successful stage play after the »Threepenny Opera«, this fast-paced gangster comedy was branded and banned by the Nazis from 1933. In his »Zeitoper«, Krenek, who was only 27, depicted the modern age of the time and at the same time protested against it. For this he used jazz, foxtrot and tango, fast-paced changes of scene and spectacular locations. After the scandalous Munich premiere of 1928 in the Gärtnerplatztheater, accompanied by death threats, organized disruptive actions, vandalism and fights with the police, »Jonnyspiel auf« finally returns to the house.
